Who Are We?

BPLSA is the Pre-Law subdivision of the National Black Law Student Association (BLSA).

Our mission is to not only be a resource for undergraduate legal students, but to empower them to reckon with how the law shapes our realities and decide how to use it to shape the future.

Officers & Committees

President (Editor in Chief)

Keeping with standard presidential duties, the President does not run one committee but their approval is essential to all committees discussed hereafter. The President is the point of contact in connection with the faculty advisor, Atty. Bevelle.

Vice President (Creative Director)

When the President is unable to fulfill all of their duties, the VP inherits or shares the responsibility. For the ‘25-’26 school year, the Vice President is responsible for The Motley-Jordan Review as the Creative Director.

Chief of Staff (Liaison)

Social Media Coordinator

The Chief of Staff is the Liaison between the BPLSA and The Motley Jordan Review. The Chief of Staff is responsible for assisting the President and Vice President, chair of the judicial board, and managing the schedule for the year.

The Social Media Coordinator is responsible for all social media posts on all BPLSA platforms. Social media will be used to showcase The Motley-Jordan Review and promote events that are BPLSA related. User-Generated content will be prioritized depending on platform.

Treasurer

The Secretary is responsible for recording and keeping track of the meeting minutes at both general body meetings and E-board meetings. The secretary will also summarize events discussed at each meeting for the benefit of the e-board and Association.

The treasurer is responsible for overseeing the organization’s financial health, ensuring transparency, and guiding strategic financial decisions. This means ensuring the proper handling of dues and other financial assets.

Miss & Mister BPLSA

Ambassadors for the Black Pre-Law Student Association. They lead community service and engagement efforts. Together, they help organize volunteer projects, strengthen BPLSA’s presence on campus, and support the treasurer in raising funds for events and initiatives that benefit pre-law students.

Events Committee

There will be 4 class representatives that will head the Events committee. We currently only have the representative for Sophomores.

This committee will be responsible for programming relevant, edifying events for our members. This is divided by class to take into account the needs of students at each stage of undergrad. The Class Reps themselves are responsible for seeing these events from conception to fruition, fully utilizing the Org’s resources. Members will expected to play a fundamental role in these processes.

The Motley-Jordan Review

We are on the cutting-edge as we will be publishing Hampton’s first ever law journal: The Motley-Jordan Review (MJR)!

This will be its own committee, headed jointly by the Vice President and Chief of Staff.

This publication will be digital and we are looking to publish on a tri-weekly basis, designating about 10-12 days for production, then the rest for editing and polish.

This timeframe will more than likely change.

The committee will have writers be divided into the 4 sections of the finished product.

Each section will be headed by a Section Editor appointed by the Creative Director (VP) and/or Editor in Chief (Pres.) There will also be 2 visual editors working alongside the writers.

Once Editors have been selected, they, the VP, and president will form an Editorial Board under which the MJR will operate.

Motley-Jordan Review

Things to keep in mind when applying for writer, section editor, and visual editor positions:

• This is an extra time/responsibility commitment–we will organize special workshops or brainstorming sessions, not to overwhelm but to make the work easier!
• You do not have to have legal writing experience, just interest and willingness to learn
• Passion is good! Speak up for the sections/topics you are genuinely interested in, even if you need to look at it from a unique legal angle
• Tell your friends to apply to the Resident Authorship Program that allows non-members to write at least 5 articles per semester!
