‘Classy’ Clubs and Activities

SMS offers students a variety of activities and clubs throughout the year

Brisa Garcia - teacher

AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.

This year AVID was offered as a class to 7th and 8th grade students. Participants had to apply for the class. Once they were accepted, students have grade and behavior requirements to fulfill.

Avelonia Quarrie - advisor

SMS Student council participated in a number events such as a visit to the Good Samaritan care facility in Socorro. StuCo members distributed electronic cards made by the Coding class to residents as music students played ukulele.

Denise Gilson - band director

SMS was lucky enough to have two talented music teachers this year! Heather Sanchez taught choir and music appreciation in the fall, with Denise coming to SMS in the spring. Under Denise’s direction SMS once again has beginning band! She has also added ukulele classes as well!

During SY 21-22 SMS was not able to ready a full team of students to compete in Science Olympiad. This year however 15 students competed in the regional event in Silver City and later in at state!

Peggy Mitchusson - teacher

SMS students received one large, professional hydroponics garden this year funded in part by a grant from Green Our Planet. This unit has enriched the Gardening and Ag classes at SMS. More than a dozen smaller units were also funded by an additional grant. These can be seen throughout the school.

Hands-on & Rigorous

CTE Classes regularly incorporate hands-on activities and project based learning, but so do the core academic classes.
