Corrective Eye Surgery Options

If you have bad eyesight, you're not alone. As much as half of all Australians wear either prescription glasses or contact lenses. But what if you want to ditch your eyeglasses or contacts for a more comfortable life?

Today, more people, both young and old, are opting for eye laser surgery. Corrective eye surgery results have continued to improve, especially with better technology and enhanced surgeon skill.

LASIK (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis)

This is the most performed corrective eye surgery in the treatment of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.  The procedure is essentially pain-free. After LASIK surgery, you can expect excellent vision within a day or two. While results may vary from one patient to another, the majority of patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after the surgery.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy)

Like it's the case with LASIK, the surgeon uses a laser to reshape your cornea. However, this procedure only affects the cornea's surface, not the tissue underneath. After the procedure, your vision is quite good almost immediately and become perfect within a few weeks.

SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction)

This method involves using a laser to cut a disc within the cornea that the eye surgeon extracts through a small incision on the surface. After the procedure, you can expect your eyes to feel a bit gritty. However, your vision will be good straight away, although it may take a few days to become excellent. It's worth noting that SMILE can't correct long-sightedness.
Are you healthy?
Your eye surgeon will typically seek detailed information regarding your general health. Some medical conditions can increase risks associated with corrective eye surgery, besides making the outcome less predictable.
Some disease or condition, whether mild or severe, may affect your immune system and impair your ability to heal. Also, they may make you more prone to infections. Patients who have some chronic conditions may experience more problems with dry eyes and postoperative pain.
