Dear Juvenilians,
We are proud to offer you an exciting and quintessential Viennese Juvenilia weekend in April, bringing you the best of both houses: Timeless operetta and comic fantasy opera at Volksoper; and one of Vienna State Opera's most-beloved verismo operas. Take a look:
Program
Friday, April 11, 19:00 @ Volksoper
KÁLMÁN - DIE CSÁRDÁSFÜRSTIN (Premiere production)The famous chansonnière Sylva is not allowed to marry her aristocratic lover Edwin. His parents arrange for him to be drafted into the army and betroth him to a countess. Sylva's dramatic arrival at the engagement party changes everything.
Begun in 1914 but delayed by World War I, Die Csárdásfürstin reflects the era's turmoil and the waning monarchy. In his production, director Johannes Erath poses the question: “Why do we still need the theater when the world threatens to sink? Why do we only realize the
value of things when we have lost them? Is it possible to invent an evening of theater that enchants every soul in the audience?”
Saturday, April 12, 19:00 @ Vienna State Opera
GIORDANO - ANDREA CHÉNIER
France, around the time of the French Revolution: the revolutionary-minded poet Andrea Chénier falls into the clutches of Robespierre's reign of terror and is suspected of being a counter-revolutionary. His fate is closely intertwined with that of the young noblewoman Maddalena Coigny and that of the former valet de chambre Gérard: both men love Maddalena, she in turn loves Chénier.
Directed by Otto Schenk, a long-time shaper of the Vienna State Opera, this production
emphasizes detailed character work, bringing humanity even to choristers and extras. Praised for his craft, Schenk's 1981 Andrea Chénier debut was noted for its vivid, lifelike ensemble scenes.
Cast: Michael Fabiano, Luca Salsi, Sonya Yoncheva. Conductor: Pier Giorgio Morandi
Sunday, April 13, 18:00 @ VolksoperNICOLAI - DIE LUSTIGEN WEIBER VON WINDSORMarried ladies Ms. Fluth and Ms. Reich, both targeted by Falstaff's identical love letters, plot revenge. At the same time, three cavaliers want to marry Anna, the daughter of Ms. Reich: Dr. Cajus, a French beau, is her mother's favourite, but her father prefers the shy Junker Spärlich, and Anna herself is in love with the penniless Fenton. Plenty of material for countless complications and entanglements.
More than 40 years before Verdi, Otto Nicolai and librettist Salomon Hermann Mosenthal used Shakespeare's play The Merry Wives of Windsor for their opera. Nicolai's opera blends romantic comedy with hints of 1848 revolutionary ideals, showcasing strong bourgeois women confronting male arrogance. Directed by Nina Spijkers, known for her fresh takes on classics, this production features sets by Tony Award winner Rae Smith.
Spijkers calls it "a story of women forming a powerful community."
