Please complete this form to give feedback on the 2020 Strategy Summit Proposals. Keep in mind that these topics should be relevant and applicable to the SSDP Global Network. Think about the long-term change that you want to see within our organization and Global movement when proposing topics of discussion.

This year's strategy summit discussions will inform the development of SSDP's global strategic plan for the next three years. What should SSDP aim to accomplish in the world? What challenges must we overcome in that time? Changes to our organization that we must make? What does the future of sensible drug policy reform look like to you?

What IS the main focus of SSDP?
Seriously, SSDP, what is THE main focus that WE want to tackle for the next 2-3 years? We NEED a harmonized agenda in these times, for both USA and internationally. We need to at least decide two or three ideas to truly push towards for local, state, federal and international policy change. Sure, I know that incrementalism for specific areas is very useful, but now that individuals have less eagerness to get together to enact change outside of a protest setting or individually, how can we get our veteran members, current student members and prospective members to all get behind one idea to enact policy change related to the war on drugs? We have SO MANY amazing people that can push ideas forward now. We can and WILL make policy change if we mobilize in the right ways; there's no time like now to make this happen. I don't know what the best choice is, but that needs to be discussed with who's at the strategy summit. Invite me if you need to, I'm more than happy to moderate this!

Drug awareness campaign amidst the covid 19 pandemic
Advocacy activities  partake both online and offline initiatives to reach out to the target audience. The inception of the covid 19 pandemic has brought about new realities that has severely altered spaces and in the global south the pandemic has  been utilized as a scape goat by authorities to shutdown the internet and also infringe on basic rights. In the wake of these challenges how best can we continue to provide and promote sensible drug policy formulation in the global south?

Adopting an truly global identity
I know this has been said many times, so worth putting on the agenda at this meeting too: SSDP has been steered by US citizens and is largely run from a US-centric point of view that had undesired rippel effects across our work. With setting up the Vienna office, it would be useful to discuss integrating the global office into global governance & adapting processes to fit the entire member-base (even outside USA).

SSDP: Supporting Students and Developing Professionals
For so many of us, SSDP has provided so much more than just an outlet for reforming drug policies. How might we better position our organization to best serve the personal and professional development of our students and allied constituents into the future? This Strategy Summit discussion seeks to understand these professional and emotional development needs that serve to prepare our students for their future beyond their involvement with SSDP. This conversation looks to align our mission and vision with ancillary support systems and opportunities for professional, emotional, and career development in tandem with reform efforts.

Data is our friend
SSDP needs to hire a digital director to coordinate social media development, decentralized digital events and training, and evaluating the organization's database platform and determine whether it is advisable to shift to another platform like Action Network. A digital director would also be responsible for fixing our email issues, testing emails and segmenting lists, managing our (expanded) use of texting, and evaluating member data to determine how to best support our network. Many of the most effective grassroots organizations have this role on their team (ex. Sunrise, Mijente), and SSDP should give this a chance.

SSDP should create a model for drug prevention, should create app like a social networking app or website that students can chat on and learn on it brings high networking capacity (people in the world will know more about SSDP and there mission)
Creating a descriptive model to teach drug policy will yield high productivity and working to make schools adopt this model will be awesome.

Law Reforms for Effective response to drug and related issues
The theme of this topic will be purely related to the law Reforms in different country in Africa Sierra Leone to be specific, especially laws  that are related to incaseration of people who use drug with no alternative for rehabilitation. This topic will help highlight some of these section's and  clauses in some of our law books in some Africa countries that are unfriendly to drug user and humanity. This will prepare us for our advocacy for law reforms with specific references in the various law books.

Regional Empowerment
SSDP is only as strong as its members. SSDP members deserve their work, perspectives and opinions more actively represented in our programmatic plan. SSDP should create regional E-boards/Exec Committees to better serve SSDP regions on the ground. These representative leadership pods will provide input and outreach/engagement support to the national/international org staff and board. These leadership pods also create a new level of leadership in SSDP for members to engage in.

Changing Conference
We need to define what the goals of the SSDP conference are. We need to better understand that the once yearly, US conference, is not accessible for many members of SSDP and that it is a large expenditure on financial and personnel resources. We need to decide how best we gather our person power.

Drug Use, culture and religion
In Africa, culture and religion inform policies, laws and value systems. These two beliefs stand firm against drug use and this is why drug policies in the continent are based on incarceration. There is need to draw the lines and strategies to overcome the huddles during advocacies and outreaches

Centralizing all team communications in Slack
I've noticed information bubbles and lack of transparency among committees and board members in my short time serving on the board. I think centralizing communications among board members, and board members and team members, in an app like Slack will help streamline communications and allow board members to engage in real-time discussions with each other and with national and international staff. While I know there has been concern about document retention requirements, I believe that if we keep all official board business communications to emails/Google Docs like we currently are, we will remain compliant. We could even utilize this platform to include chapter leaders in an attempt to help connect our members with our global HQ team. For example, chapter leaders could reach out directly to board members, or staff members, in designated channels. We could also then encourage chapter members to create their own chapter Slack, so that communication with the chapter's members can also be centralized.

IAF & Project Funding - sustainable project funding for chapters & national networks
I would like us to talk about (re)designing how we source project funding in a sustainable way for chapters and national networks within SSDP. For example, the IAF has been a tension point for different reasons for different people in the network, I think we can figure out a way that doesn't exclude anyone from taking part and ease campaigning/campaign design that is internationally geared, but I would like to see how everyone thinks about this...

Professional Development for non-US members
Professional development, ie access to conferences, workshops and eduactional events have been practically nonexistnent for SSDP members outside of the US yet one of the crucial building blocks of raising the next generation of leaders. Creating these opportunities requires efforts put towards building relationships outside of the US, and providing support for the PR Management outside of the US. I would like this to be reflected in the Multi-Year plan.

Paradigma and international relations within SSDP
I think the boards of SSDP and paradigma as well as staff should sit down and talk about how the two boards will relate to one another, what goals the Paradigma is working on and how SSDP can support them, and how to improve relations between the org and the chapters outside the US.

SSDP Global Virtual Conference 2021
This session will be dedicated to capturing ideas for a virtual conference that SSDP  could host in 2021. The conference would occur over the course of a weekend but at a max of 15 hours and with live google hangouts calls instead of pre-recorded discussions. Some sessions will be regional-based, others globally. The objective of this call is to decide how we are moving forward with a virtual conference in 2021 and other conferences beyond 2021. Who will be in charge of planning a virtual conference? When will it be? When do we want the next In-Person conference to take place? When should we do Regional/International conferences? This session will result in collective feedback answering all of these questions.

SSDP International Board(s)
It has longed been discussed that what is now the "SSDP Global" board of directors should adapt to be more officially US based with representation from other SSDP sister/partner organizations around the world. Is this the time to redesign the SSDP Board of directors so that we can build our relationship and work with these partner organizations such as the Vienna office?

SSDP Staffing Structure
This session will be taking a look at the staffing structure of SSDP including full time staff members, international staff members, contractors, and interns. This session is intended to analyze all SSDP staff positions as a collective, when each individual contract is up, and how will the new Vienna office/staff be intertwined with the US SSDP staff? Ultimately this session hopes to imagine what the future of the SSDP team looks like as a part of SSDP's Multi-Year Planning.

SSDP and The United Nations 17 Goals
This session will explore the idea that we should redirect SSDPs mission to align with the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals and shape our organizations mission to reflect intersectionality with many other causes and harm reduction efforts. As a Global organization it would create the opportunity to put more energy into global advocacy and participation in the United Nations.

Conferences/Professional Development
In order for more funding to be available to SSDP, and to allow for more SSDP staff/leaders to attend conference around the world (not just in the USA), there must be relationships built with conference hosts, organisations and prominent figures in the drug policy reform world. There needs to be awareness built among the international community about SSDP, past the USA.

Creating a protocol and safe space for conflict resolution within SSDP
It has become very apparent that there is a recurring problematic behavior pattern within our organization: interpersonal conflict between individuals within SSDP derails the Board and Team and makes it nearly impossible to stay focused on the important tasks at hand (especially in such a critical transition period like right now). We've already identified this problem, now we must find a solution. We need to construct and implement a protocol that offers a safe space with professional mediation (upon request) to resolve such conflicts, as well as hold individuals accountable for any kind of intentionally harmful behavior towards another individual (or several). Examples of this may include: any form of discrimination (racial, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, etc), bullying of any kind, any form of harassment or abuse (sexual, emotional, physical). In order to successfully lead our organization through this critical transition and growth period, we need to rebuild trust, mend relationships, and implement accountability to effectively work as a team.
