Imagining Community: Shaping a More Equitable Dayton

The symposium is open to all community members, activists, artists, students, scholars, and academics with the goal of exploring the history, legacy, and impact on Dayton’s racial segregation, and how to move toward a more just, equitable, and inclusive Dayton. Joint submissions are welcome. The symposium is free and open to the public; registration will be required. 

This conference will prioritize accessibility. The venue is wheelchair accessible and will have a quiet room. Additional information about accessibility can be found on the forthcoming conference webpage. All conference participants will be invited to identify ways that the conference organizers can help mitigate possible barriers to participation. 

Proposals may include: panels, poster boards, spoken word, art exhibits, workshops, community engaged projects, lightning talk, storytelling and community voices, scholarly presentations, reports of activities. 

Sample topics include:
-Activism and Catalyzing Change: Coping, Resistance, Reconciliation, and Reparations
-Racism and White Supremacy’s Impact on Communities, Families, and Individuals
-Government, Non-Profit, and Faith-Based Organizations: Perpetuating and Challenging Racial Outcomes
-Immigration, Refugees, and Asylum: ”Certified Welcoming” Immigrant Friendly City
-Land Acknowledgement, and Indigenous Perspectives on Dayton’s Legacy 
-Reassessing the Past: Historical Events and Shaping Race
-Disparities in Educational Funding, Attainment, and Access
-Environmental Racism, Food Access, and Health Justice
-Dayton Business: Banking, Real Estate, Minority-Owned Business, Entrepreneurship 
-Planning and Policy: Public Transportation, Green Space, Highways, and Industry
-Policing, Surveillance, and Incarceration
-Housing: Public Housing, Suburbs, White Flight, Redlining and Other Housing Policies
-Land Use, Industry, and Green Space

Other related topics are encouraged.
