Youth Leadership Institute (yli) builds communities where young people and their adult allies come together to create positive community change that promotes social justice and racial equity. Our Long Beach programs aim to do this through a blend of advocacy, leadership, and storytelling. Our programs are open to youth between 14 to 24 years old who live in or near Long Beach. Please read this carefully and let us know what programs you're interested in joining!

This doesn't affect your ability to work with us, it just helps us plan appropriately for meetings where we may need to provide rides to our space or to your homes. This and the previous question may also help us determine meeting locations that are accessible to all accepted youth cohort members.

Experience is not required for participating in our programs! We will train you to have the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in our programs.

VoiceWaves: Youth will learn to utilize journalism and storytelling skills to uplift their stories and the stories of their communities, inspiring civic engagement and community change through their writing, photography, podcasting, and videography. This program currently meets on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. for youth ages 14 to 18 and on Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for youth ages 18 to 24 who are no longer attending high school.
