We believe that mystery and magic are inherent to songs and the process of songwriting. We invite our students to use ritual as a tool to encounter mystery, striking a careful balance between control and abandon, initiative and release.
In this 4-week generative songwriting workshop led by Maya Keren and Camila Ortiz, we will offer specific tools to put students in touch with their spiritual instincts. We will create rituals inspired by three groups of concrete songwriting skills: intuition, embodiment, and improvisation; free-writing, lyrics, and melody; and harmony, form, and rhythm. Between each class, students will develop a song seed, and by the end of the class, produce one finished song either arranged for live performance or recorded.
This class is open to anyone who has a relationship to songwriting, from complete beginners to more experienced songwriters. Maybe you like to record yourself singing on your voice memos in your apartment, maybe you’ve been jotting down lyrics in your notes app. Maybe you're six albums deep but you're looking for a new entry point to writing! Everyone can learn something from this class.
We will meet Sundays, 3-5pm, on October 11, 18, 25 and November 1, at Secret Riso Club (122 Central Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11221.)
The class will be hosted in the lower level of the space, which is down a short flight of stairs.
The monthlong class is $200-300 sliding scale, paid by Venmo or Zelle upfront. In order to reserve your spot, please send the class fee through Venmo @mayakeren or Zelle mayapkeren@gmail.com. If you are able to pay the full amount, please do.
We are capping the class at 10 people but we will add a waitlist once registration is full.
We will follow up with you with more details once you send the class fee and fill out the Google Form. Please reach out to songritualcreativepractice@gmail.com with any questions.
