Pedagogical Cinema | Nick Deocampo's The Saga of Philippine Cinema
The UNESCO Memory of the World and the Center for New Cinema present the launch of Pedagogical Cinema (education through films) featuring Professor Nick Deocampo's seven-part film series The Saga of Philippine Cinema.

All screenings will be held at the UPFI Film Center Videotheque at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.

Tickets will be sold for ₱ 100 at the venue. Limited seating capacity.

    [Opening Film] Dec. 4, 2023 (5 PM)
    A film historian (played by National Artist for Theater Tony Mabesa) recalls the history of Philippine cinema from its colonial beginnings to its national maturity.

  • CINE>SINE: Spanish Beginnings of Philippine Cinema
    Dec. 5, 2023 (5 PM)
    The documentary brings the Spanish past of Philippine cinema through language, material culture, aesthetics, and ideology.

  • FILM: American Beginnings of Philippine Cinema
    Dec. 6, 2023 (5 PM)
    The American past of Philippine cinema has contributed technology, capital, aesthetics, and consumerist ideology to make movies a popular culture.
     
  • EIGA: Cinema during World War II
    Dec. 7, 2023 (5 PM)
    The destruction brought about by the Japanese occupation has wrought havoc to cinema’s growth and made propaganda its lasting contribution.

  • PELIKULA: Birth of Philippine Cinema
    Dec. 8, 2023 (5 PM)
    Jose Nepomuceno’s intervention to make moving pictures allowed cinema to flourish as a homegrown cultural expression and helped shape a national film culture. 

  • MARTIAL LAW FILMS: Films under Martial Law
    Dec. 9, 2023 (2 PM)
    The films produced during martial law are studied for their social and semiotic significance, revealing hidden subversions contained in the cinematic texts. 

  • PHILIPPINE ALTERNATIVE CINEMA: Non-mainstream Cinema
    Dec. 9, 2023 (5 PM)
    Outside the mainstream cinema is the alternative world of short films, documentaries, experimental films, and all things that are cinematically oppositional.
