ReThink STEM Classes - FALL Session #1 2021
Welcome!  We are looking forward to beginning STEM Classes for FALL SESSION 1!  This form will allow you to register your children for FALL SESSION #1 classes, which run for 6 weeks (September 14-October 21)

Last year, we held all classes on Zoom, with students posting videos of their projects on Flipgrid.
As the public health situation has evolved, we are now able to offer some classes in person with COVID-19 protocols (see link below)  For in-person classes, we will limit class size to 10 students (with masks and social distancing).  Classes will be held indoors in the large Fellowship Hall, which is ventilated through two outside doors. For some activities, we will be able to use the outside patio.

Based on our recent survey of returning students' needs, families were equally divided between a preference for online and in-person classes (31% and 34%) and the remaining 35% are open to either format.  So, we are offering classes accordingly, with two days of in-person offerings and one day of online Zoom classes.

Tuesdays (In person, ages 8-14+)
12:45-1:55 Science (Electricity and Magnetism)
2:05-3:15 Inventor/Engineer Club

Wednesdays (In person, ages 8-14+)
12:45-1:55 Science (Electricity and Magnetism)
2:05-3:15 Inventor/Engineer Club

Thursdays (Online, ages 8-14+)
11:00-12:00 Inventor/Engineer Club
1:00-2:00  Inventor/Engineer Club

(For this session, we do not have the use of the large Fellowship Hall space on Fridays.  We hope to offer an in-person Friday morning class for Middle School in Fall Session #2, which begins at the end of October.  Please email me directly if your middle school+ aged student (ages 11-16) is interested in an online Friday morning class beginning sooner).

CLASS SIZE: Instead of our usual small classes that have a cap of 12 students, online classes have a cap of 8 students.  We need enough students to have a variety of engineering solutions, but few enough for personal attention in a zoom.  For social distancing purposes, In-person classes will be limited to 10 students in our 40 foot by 40 foot classroom.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM:
All students in online and in-person classes will be linked to a Google Classroom group for weekly messages and project Flipgrid links.

FLIPGRID and SUPPLIES:
All students will have the opportunity to see each other's constructions on Flipgrid during the week.  Students in Online classes will pick up partial supply "starter kits" twice during the session (details will be shared on Google Classroom after registration).

                                                                         INVENTOR/ENGINEER CLUB:
                                                                  6 Weeks September 14- October 21
The Inventor/Engineer Clubs harness students’ natural sense of wonder and curiosity, their quest to understand how things work and their fascination with building.   Students learn and practice the steps of the Engineering Design Process as they design, make prototypes, build, test, and improve simple devices using household materials.  Students will engage in five engineering construction challenges, the last one being a two week project with the option to participate in our annual Fall Engineering Competition to be held in late November.
                                                                                       (Ages 8-14+)
In person class $100, sibling $75  (plus $10 supply fee)
Online class $85, sibling $65 (plus $10 supply fee)

                                                                  ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM
                                                                 6 Weeks September 14- October 21

                                                                                       (Ages 8-14+)
In person class $100, sibling $75 (plus $10 supply fee)

Conduct hands-on investigations with magnets, conductors, insulators, circuits, and use this knowledge to solve and develop new circuit puzzles.  Make electromagnets, simple batteries, switches, and tiny motors.  Convert human power to electrical power with pedals and cranks.  Apply your science knowledge to engineer some "make and take" electricity projects:  Construct your own motor and design your own working miniature alarm system!   Electrifying for all ages!

SUPPLIES
 SUPPLIES*
Hands-on science and Engineering actives require a lot of supplies.

For in-person classes, all supplies will be provided (with the exception of shoe boxes, which students are sometimes asked to contribute for our larger constructions)

For online classes, we provide a "starter kit" for each construction, which includes each of the supplies we provide for in person classes. The first week's construction will be done with items found at home.  There will be 2 supply pick-ups during the remainder of the six week class.  Since many of our supplies and materials will be items typically found at home, students in online classes may supplement with items from home and improvise when needed.  On Mondays, there will be a general message on Google Classroom listing any items to gather at home in preparation for the class on the following days.  Some examples of supplies that are assumed to be available at home (among others) are scissors, rulers, paper, cardboard from the recycling bin, tape, and glue.

Pick-up times for supply bags* from Margaret at Holy Cross Lutheran Church will be announced on Google Classroom.

*Students who are not local will be able to make supply substitutions
