We, the undersigned alumnae of Barnard College, call upon you to negotiate in good faith a fair first contract with Barnard Contingent Faculty-UAW Local 2110 (BCF-UAW). We are deeply concerned that many contingent faculty, two-thirds of whom are women, do not earn a living wage and have no health insurance, retirement benefits, or job security.
Contingent faculty, who teach the majority of Barnard courses, deserve better treatment and basic workplace rights that reflect their integral role at the College. Indeed, the dedication of all Barnard faculty, regardless of rank, has been vital to our intellectual and professional development.
We commend Barnard for embracing a new Bold Standard for teaching and learning. This commitment should entail respectful treatment of contingent faculty. We urge you to set a new bold standard by recognizing that the entire Barnard community is best served by a fair union contract.
