Survivor Shout Outs 2016

April is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). During SAAM, our goal is to raise awareness about sexual assault and educate communities and individuals on how we can prevent it. Survivor shout outs are a way we as a community can show our support to survivors of sexual assault.

    The Starfish Story

Thousands of starfish washed ashore. A little girl began throwing them in the water so they wouldn’t die. Someone said it wouldn’t make a difference. Throwing another starfish into the sea, the girl replied, “it made a difference to that one.” Starfish have the power to heal themselves and fully regenerate after being wounded. For us, the starfish symbolizes the challenging yet hopeful path to healing. These shout outs affirm the strength and courage of all survivors. Make a difference by giving a supportive shout out to survivors of sexual assault.

How to Give a Shout Out

Shout outs will be written on a starfish shape and included in our Survivor Table during SAAM events in April. Please be aware of our guidelines before submitting a shout out: 1. You are welcome to use a common first name or your relationship to them, i.e. my friend, my classmate, my family member. 2. We strongly discourage including full first and last names or unique first names or nick names that will identify the survivor. Please use initials or your relationship to them if their name is very unique. 3. You are welcome to submit more than one shout out. 4. If you do not know someone who has been sexually assaulted, you may also choose to give a shout out to survivors in general. 5. SARC reserves the right to NOT post your shout out if you include identifying information in your submission.

Here are some examples of how you can give your shout out to a survivor.

Where will these shout outs go?

Shoutouts submitted through our online form AND in person at tabling events throughout campus will be written on teal paper in the shape of a starfish. They will be displayed in our Survivor Shoutouts Table throughout the SAAM events in the month. Reminder: CARE at the Sexual Assault Resource Center reserves the right to NOT post your shout out if you include identifying information in your submission.
