**SIGNATURES WILL BE COMPILED AND SENT TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, UNC OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT, CHANCELLOR FOLT AND OTHER RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2018**
The Board of Trustees and Chancellor Folt have prioritized the bigotry of a small number of major donors and right-wing politicians in developing their outrageous plan to spend more than $5 million of taxpayers' dollars to construct an on-campus shrine to the racism and oppression that Silent Sam represents. This shrine to Silent Sam and the KKK would require a militarized "safety buffer zone" and more than $800,000 per year in operating expenses.
This is a deeply harmful and irresponsible use of funds, as explained by the student leaders of UNC's Black Student Movement in their public statement: "It is a disgrace to Carolina’s students that the University will spend more than $5 million on a new history center with the sole purpose of holding and protecting this statue, when there are more pressing and beneficial initiatives that these funds could go toward — supporting the increase in admission and the retention of more Black male students, supporting programs offered by UNC’s Office for Diversity & Inclusion, ensuring that Latinx students have a physical communal space on our campus, and reducing student costs and fees. Given the particular history of South Campus and Odum Village as a significant location for Black students to live and congregate, we find that the University’s plan to relocate Silent Sam here is especially harmful." AS ALUMNI, STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF, AND UNC COMMUNITY MEMBERS, WE PLEDGE TO WITHHOLD ALL PHILANTHROPIC CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL UNTIL A PLAN IS ADOPTED THAT PERMANENTLY REMOVES SILENT SAM FROM CAMPUS.
We will not participate in any university giving campaigns, including the current "For All Kind: Campaign for Carolina" that purports to build a university where "opportunity is for all kind." We make this promise in solidarity with the courageous UNC community members who have put their bodies on the line, regularly facing an aggressive, militarized police force armed with tear gas, to protest Silent Sam. Please consider redirecting your UNC donation to support these anti-racist activists' legal fund: https://fundrazr.com/SupportUNCActivists?ref=ab_0LeyHxSqLFe0LeyHxSqLFe
THIS PLEDGE TO WITHHOLD ALL PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORT STANDS AS LONG AS SILENT SAM IS ON CAMPUS.
