Reimagining Public Safety
Thurs., August 13, 7 p.m. via Zoom
What makes a community safe? What is the role of policing and the justice system? How can we best use our limited resources to create safe communities and safety for all of us? Are there data-driven policies that give us direction? These are questions that are being discussed in communities across the United States, brought to the fore by outrage over the deaths of George Floyd and so many more Blacks who have died at the hands of police. Join us on August 13 for a lively discussion with two amazing community advocates.
Wesley Bell, Prosecuting Attorney, St. Louis County
Wesley Bell was elected as prosecuting attorney of St. Louis County in 2018. He is the first African American to serve in this position and is committed to making St. Louis County a national leader in criminal justice reform. Wesley has served with distinction across the spectrum of the legal profession as a public defender, defense attorney, judge, professor and prosecutor. He is an advocate for ending mass incarceration, eliminating “debtors’ prison” practices, and rebuilding trust between communities and the prosecutor’s office.
Jamala Rogers, co-chair, Coalition Against Police Crimes and Repression (CAPCR)
Jamala Rogers is a longtime community organizer and child advocate. She is co-chair of the Coalition Against Police Crimes and Repression, which has led efforts to actualize local control of the St. Louis City police and to implement an independent civilian review board. CAPCR launched its Real Public Safety campaign four years ago, which has now been amplified in the national demand to defund the police.
