Kingsessing Landscape Architecture Survey
This past spring students from Philadelphia University’s landscape architecture program were presented an opportunity to work on a project in Southwest Philadelphia, specifically right in the neighborhood of Kingsessing. Working with John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge and Audubon Pennsylvania, the students met with community leaders and members to identify empty lots and open spaces that the community would like to see transformed into productive, fun, educational community spaces for Kingsessing residents. The students used an asset-based community driven design process to enable residents to envision and help design a dynamic, resilient and prosperous neighborhood. The students hosted a series of meetings, inviting community leaders and neighbors to identify areas of opportunity that would make the most of existing assets in the neighborhood, while addressing issues that are important to Kingsessing residents. After several months of in-depth discussions, draft designs, more input and more drafts, the students presented their final designs to the community on April 28th at Francis Myers Recreation Center.

This survey shows the various projects the students developed. We would like your input as to the concepts and ideas you see most appropriate and fitting for the community.

Finally, it is important to note two things as you go through this survey:

1) Different aspects of each of these projects may be combined or applied to different sites around the neighborhood. For instance, we could combine "community gathering" and "health/nutrition".
2) Partners and community leaders involved with target lots will be actively working with City Council members to gain their non-monetary support for this work.

Please follow the directions in the survey and we thank you for your interest and support!!
