Conditions of Hire
• Hire will be dependent on weather and water conditions.
• Hire will be dependent on a risk assessment of the hirer(s) and any medical conditions.
• Please bring photographic ID. This will be photographed for security purposes.
• The minimum age is 6. There must be at least one adult in the group.
• Please bring a mobile phone to use in case of emergency. We will supply a waterproof bag (used at your risk).
• We will supply a map and emergency contact number.
• We have a changing cubicle. We do not supply wet suits, so a change of clothing is advisable.
• You must wear a buoyancy aid, which we provide.
• Helmets are available, if requested.
• You will be given a safety briefing and help with launching your craft.
All equipment for hire is subject to availability.
CJB Training and Adventure is not responsible for the use of the equipment. We only provide equipment to be used under the skills and abilities of the hirer, we require no proof of ability and offer no advice or instruction in the use of the equipment and how they are to be used.
I acknowledge that Paddlesports is an activity with inherent risks of injury to persons and property. I am aware of those risks and understand them. CJB Training and Adventure requires all hirers to wear a Buoyancy Aid at all times while on the water. I understand the dangers of paddling on tidal or still water and understand that weather can play a factor in paddling safety and that such activities are subject to the unpredictable forces of nature.
Anyone hiring equipment does so at their own risk and must realise their own ability and experience.
The use of our rental equipment is to be within our designated area, i.e. Chesterfeild canal. Removing a watercraft from the canal or out of the water other than at the time of launching and returning the craft is considered to be theft and the police will be informed. The hire craft must not be lifted over any Locks on the canal.
We provide paddles, buoyancy aids as part of our canoe hire package. We expect all equipment to be returned at the agreed time and in the same condition as it was hired. Loss replacement and damage repair will be charged at the prevailing rates. If any damage or loss has occurred the following arrangements will be made:
a) Hirer will pay for any required repairs or replacements in full
b) Where repairs are not possible the hirer will pay for the equipment in full
c) Any costs for repairs or replacements shall be taken from the cover fee and the hirer will pay for any excess amounts on demand.

Damage repair to canoes, kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards and equipment is charged at £25 per hour + materials.
Courtesy to all other waterway users and anglers is requested from our hirers.
The minimum age to hire the equipment is 18 years old. The persons hiring and in charge of people under the age of 18. Young people under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Unaccompanied children aged 17 and under will not be allowed to hire.
Behaviour considered to be a danger to either the hirer or other canal users will cancel hire immediately and incur loss of deposit.
A photo ID and credit card details per watercraft hire is required and will be charged on the following: a) loss of paddles b) damage as a result of collision with another watercraft or canal bank. The operators reserve the right to refuse or cease hire at any time without prejudice. Theft of watercraft / equipment will be reported to the police and damages pursued through civil action.
No children under the age of 6 are allowed in the canoes / SUPs/ kayak.
All hirers are required to wear a buoyancy aid.
Images are recorded for security reasons.
Unauthorised launching of a watercraft will result in cancellation of the hire without refund.
Motorised craft on the canal have priority on the waterway and avoid at all times.
Persons assessed as being under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be refused hire, without prejudice. No alcohol should be consumed prior to or during your trip on the water.
Every person in my group must attend the safety briefing and complete and sign a Health and Safety Disclaimer
All paddlers are required to sign a consent form – forms can be downloaded the from CJB training and adventure website or at the hire location.
CJB training and adventure paddle craft are for use on the chesterfield canal Canal as far as the Staveley basin and Dixons Lock. They are not to be used on the river.
All equipment shall be returned at the agreed time and place – late return without prior agreement shall result in a fixed penalty of 1 hours hire for each hourly period late.
Cautionary notes:
Can you and all members of your party swim? Buoyancy aids are essential with each hire, these must be worn. Swimming in the canal is not advised.
Be aware that after time on the water you are likely to feel unsteady on your feet when landing.
We would like you to enjoy your time on the water, have fun, but do so safely! All activity on the water is potentially dangerous, when on hire you are at your own risk.
AGREEMENT FOR THE HIRE OF WATERCRAFT SUPPLIED BY CJB training and adventure
• I have read and understood the CJB training and adventure Terms and Conditions of Hire and agree to comply with the guidelines.
• I, the hirer, am responsible for your own and the rest of your group’s safety.
• I will listen to all safety advice by the CJB training and adventure staff.
