Volunteer Application: Cedar-Riverside Adult Education Collaborative (CRAEC)
CRAEC holds adult ELL classes at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. The majority of our students come from East Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia). Volunteers assist teachers and students in the classroom in various ways. Common volunteer roles include working with students one-on-one and in small groups, role-playing conversations, answering questions, and helping the teacher present a lesson. Volunteers give our students the extra attention and practice they need to advance in their English acquisition.
Monday-Friday mornings 9am-12pm;
Monday-Thursday afternoons 12:00-3:00pm
Monday-Thursday evenings 6pm-9pm
Volunteers generally tutor for a three-hour class once or twice a week. Volunteers can also assist students with specific tutoring such as citizenship preparation, computer literacy, resume writing and job applications. Time commitments for these activities are more flexible.
Special requirements: Patience, dedication to education, interest in working with non-English speakers and learning about other cultures.
Orientation: Volunteers receive an orientation to the program before beginning their position, either in a group or arranged individually. Volunteers can also expect ongoing support from the supervising teacher, the volunteer coordinator and ESL program coordinator.
