Early Childhood Literacy with Multilingual Students 
This module focuses on some interactive strategies to involve young multilingual students in listening, speaking, reading, and writing lessons.  Work through this module by making notes for yourself of what you'd like to use or take-away after each of the first nine resources listed.  The tenth item below is optional. Then answer the three short, self-checking quiz items before you move on to print out the Certificate of Completion for the module at the end that is worth 2 professional learning hours.  Be sure to enter your own name in the text box before you print out your Certificate to keep in your professional files!

Young Multilingual Learners

1. Watch this 9-minute video , "Small Group Interactive Writing in Kindergarten.". Her modeling, repetition, use of hand motions, welcoming tone, and clear directions encourage all of the learners to be engaged.  She reinforces beginning sounds and writing simultaneously as she guides students in recalling a story they just read together.  What strategies could you add to your teaching techniques to scaffold your instruction for young learners?

2. Look at this website called A Book and a Hug to view books you may want to use with your young learners.  There are Latinx, South Asian, Native American, and other books you can click on at the Home Page of the site to explore possibilities.  After you see the website, write a book title you may find helpful for your classroom or school library.

3. Here is a 21-page report from the U.S. Department of Education aimed to help teachers of multilingual learners nurture new learning of English as students maintain their native languages.  It is titled, "Integrating Language into Early Childhood Education," and it contains 4 key recommendations with descriptions of the practices, examples of the practices in action, and links to other resources about each of the practices.  Look it over to jot down some notes that will be helpful to you in your classroom. *
4. Listen to this 9-minute audio interview, "Supporting Cultural Diversity in the Preschool Classroom," which discusses how to bring an appreciation of cultural diversity to the classroom and play practices of young learners.  The activities focus on preschool through grade 2 multilingual children. After listening, jot down concrete ideas you hear in the podcast that you can do in your setting. *
5.  Watch this 7-minute video, "How to Read to Young ESL Children"  which includes routines and language scaffolds to engage young multilingual learners in a read-aloud.  After watching, describe what routines you can copy or adapt for your own classroom. *

Here is the first in a series of short videos called,  "What is Phonics--Teaching Tips for ESL Kindergarten Teachers?" that focuses on teaching phonics to multilingual learners.  If you like this introductory video, you can click on others in the phonics series that are linked below.  Write ideas you want to remember from the video(s) you watch in the blanks below. *
7. Watch this 6-minute discussion about teaching phonics sounds as students are working in learning to read and write in both English and Spanish (or another language).  The video is, "Teaching Your Kids to Read in Two Languages." After watching, think about which lessons or tips you might use in your classroom or share with the families of your learners. *
8. Watch this 8-minute video, "Teach Language with Picture Books," which uses wordless picture books to help teach your multilingual students.  After watching, jot down tips you heard to apply in your classroom or to share with families of your students. *
9. Visit this website called, Language Lizards.  This site has children's books for purchase in various languages as well as free resources for teachers.  The link takes you to the page of free resources.  List your favorite resource below.  *
10. This optional item is a longer video (69 minutes) from a webinar produced by the Institute of Education Sciences in developing vocabulary learning in a language-rich literacy setting for young learners.  Here is a link to the webinar entitled, "Language and Literacy Development in Pre-K--1st Grade: Words and More."  After watching, jot down ideas you gained for your own classroom.
