Open Letter to Robinson College, Cambridge
Dear Warden and fellows of Robinson College,

RE: Entrance requirements for prospective 2020 matriculants

As members of the College, we are proud of the strong record Robinson has in improving access to the University of Cambridge for students of all backgrounds.

This year clearly presents unique challenges. We are concerned that the automatic allocation of A-Level results has left capable students from less well-performing schools with results that do not reflect their true abilities. Failure to acknowledge this would, in our view, represent a significant step backwards for accessibility.

With that in mind, we are calling on the College to place its faith in the interview process and honour all of this year’s offers, even in cases where automatic moderation has caused applicants to fall short of their entry requirements. We note that Worcester College, Oxford has already done so.

We appreciate that this course of action may necessitate deferments to accommodate an atypically large intake. However, while there is no perfect solution, we believe this path is the only fair one for students who have been denied the opportunity to sit their exams.

Just as Robinson set an example as the first undergraduate college to be co-educational from its inception, we now have the opportunity to lead in widening access for all promising students - not just those selected by a rushed and imperfect algorithm.

Yours sincerely,
