Welcome to your first step in joining the 2016 Beaver Island Summer Institute!
This experience will be offered free of cost to twenty teachers based on a donation from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation.
As teachers work to implement the Next Generation Science Standards as well as the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for Literacy in Science, we recognize the need for new types of collaboration and innovation in our instructional practices. With an increased focus on disciplinary literacy practices that include a study of genres within particular subject areas, renewed attention to developing academic vocabulary, and a focus on comprehending informational texts, the new literacy standards will require teachers to rethink their approaches to instruction, experiential learning, and technology integration.
As advocates for reading and writing across the curriculum, as well as for the thoughtful use of newer literacies and technologies to support literacy growth, the National Center for Literacy Education and the Chippewa River Writing Project and Department of Biology at Central Michigan University offer this an intensive, one-week field-based workshop middle school teachers from the Great Lakes Bay Region of Michigan: Arenac, Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Midland and Saginaw counties.
Our institute will take place on Beaver from August 14 through 19, 2016. Additionally, we will schedule at least three synchronous, online meetings in the 2016-17 school year that your team will need to have at least one representative participate. Our institute will be capped at 20 participants.
At minimum, we require a pair of teachers -- one English Language Arts and one science who are committed to implementing inquiry-driven, literacy-rich instruction in the 2016-17 school year -- and we welcome up to two additional teachers from a single middle school to join in as well.
In this application form, please write a brief statement (no more than 500 words) describing:
- How you are currently thinking about and planning for the integration of science and literacy standards- When and how, specifically, you will plan to work together toward integration in the 2016-17 school year- How your participation in this institute will help you meet shared goals for the integration of science and literacy standards
Finally, we need a letter of support from your administrator documenting their commitment to these goals.

We expect to notify the teachers teachers who have been selected for the summer institute by mid-April.
