Recognizing Outstanding Pre-Service Social Studies Professionals

Each teacher education program in Ohio may select one student each year for OCSS recognition as a “Dr. James J. Sheehan Pre-Service Social Studies Teacher Honoree”

Selected students from each institution will be recognized on our website and other publications (picture, brief biographical statement, etc.) and will receive a letter and certificate from OCSS for their professional portfolio. OCSS will also announce the list of recipients at the annual conference.

Each accredited institution in Ohio training social studies educators may select one student for recognition each year. Most often, this will be a student completing a “methods” course and/or student teaching in the academic year they are recognized.

General guidelines to assist universities in making their selection:

+The recognized student should have an overall GPA in the department of 3.5 or higher and have a clear understanding of best practices and the social studies approach to teaching.

+The recognized student should demonstrate a desire to become involved in OCSS and other professional social studies organizations to grow as a professional and further the profession.

+The recognized student should demonstrate leadership at her/his institution and community.

+The institution may assign additional criteria related to their teacher education program and professional dispositions.+
