Description:

The Virtual Queer Workshop aims at providing a platform to take stocks of and ponder on the workings of 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝘄. It shall constitute a space for introspection and retrospection on this emerging research approach and to invent a dis/orienting (Ahmed 2006) future for international law through its conceptual queering. By welcoming (un-)conventional contributions, the event series aims at exposing the multiplicity of ways in which to produce knowledge and practice relative to the process of queering international law.

Through dynamic and transversal conversations among participants, the goal of the workshop is to explore whether and how queering international law is possible. While being heterogenous by definition, queer approaches to international law are generally concerned with gender, sexuality, power, normativities, boundaries and/or exclusions. They draw on a variety of anti-normative projects, including critical philosophy, feminist, post-colonial and decolonial, Marxist and ableist-critical perspectives.

The Virtual Queer Workshop conceptualises this plurality of approaches by thinking of queering international law as an endless and non-linear journey with different stops and stations. In this journey, subjects and concepts travel over borders and boundaries, go back and forth. Sometimes, subjects and concepts reside in the same place for a long time and make the space around them their home, before they move on and become ‘out of place’ somewhere else. Sometimes, their journey is stopped by border controls and visa restrictions. Thus, the Virtual Workshop also seeks to analyse the realities of (im)mobility, exclusions and inclusions created in and through queer methods and methodologies in international law.
