Student Activities & Leadership Programs is proud to host the first Diversity & Leadership Institute. The institute is a day long program that will offer a space for participants to engage in a dialogue on diversity and leadership. It will feature educational sessions and workshops that will focus on the real world application of inclusion/acceptance, affirming identity, understanding differences, and the individual as a leader. Participants will learn about what it means to be a leader in a diverse world and how to become stronger leaders.
Overarching themes that we will advertise are real world application of:
- Affirming identity: Workshops will focus on helping participants grapple with the diverse identity development of self and others. Participants should walk away with an understanding of how to engage diversity in healthy ways that affirm the dignity, value, and uniqueness of each person without losing one’s own identity.
- Inclusion/acceptance: Workshops will focus on helping participants gain an understanding of the various areas of diversity, the debilitating effects of stereotypes, and the importance of acknowledging, celebrating, and leveraging differences. Participants will learn the importance of being authentically justice-centered in their personal, academic, and professional dealings with others.
- Individual as leader: Workshops will focus on the various ways in which individuals are leaders encouraging participants to intentionally communicate across cultures, manage conflict across culture, lead across cultures, and form ethical standards that encompass inclusion and social justice. Workshops should draw out the application of ethics, inclusion, and diversity to real world settings such as college, relationships, student organizations, and work.
The Diversity & Leadership Institute will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 from 1pm-6pm in the Bernhard Center.
