Pittsburgh Policy Initiative (PPI): Policy Analyst Application (2026-27)

About Us:

The Pittsburgh Policy Initiative (PPI) is the first student-run think tank at the University of Pittsburgh. Our mission is to empower students to lead community-centered policy analysis and advocacy projects, ensuring that public policy reflects people’s lived experiences. By providing research support to local nonprofits and community organizations, we help shape policies that are more inclusive, effective, and impactful for Pittsburgh's residents.

Position Overview:

Policy Analysts help PPI achieve its mission by conducting in-depth policy research, developing advocacy initiatives, and collaborating with community stakeholders. This role gives students hands-on experience in policy development, allowing them to make a tangible impact in Pittsburgh and its surrounding communities. Analysts work in teams to lead policy analysis and advocacy projects while gaining professional growth through writing, organizing, and public engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Policy Research and Analysis: Conduct data collection, database research, and policy analysis on issues relevant to community stakeholders.
  • Writing and Advocacy: Draft white papers, issue briefs, and reports for local policymakers, community organizations, and the public.
  • Legislative Support: Provide research and testimony to support policy initiatives before local or state legislative bodies.
  • Policy Development: Collaborate with community partners to help design new legislation or policy proposals aimed at addressing local challenges.
  • Program Development: Help create community programs or education campaigns that align with PPI’s mission to foster civic engagement and public service.

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in public policy, social justice, or community advocacy.
  • Proficient research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams, managing multiple projects.
  • Good communication and listening skills, particularly in presenting research findings.
  • Commitment to PPI’s mission of community-focused policy work.
  • Experience with data analysis and public policy research (nice to have but not required).
