2023 Summer Student Organizer Training Application
Our movement is struggling to combat multiple devastating crises at once - crises of climate, racial injustice, economic inequality, and restricted rights for women, immigrants, and LGBTQIA people. So often the solutions seem impossible. What’s become more clear, especially since the 2021 insurrection, is that at the root of it all lies a crisis of democracy. It’s not just a crisis of democracy’s rules and laws, but in our collective faith in its possibility. History, scholarship, and our own deep experience as organizers teaches us that a key to strengthening democracy is transforming and reimagining institutions of public education for the common good. By organizing broadly and intersectionally to defend public education, we can build a nimble and powerful force for political change that can be mobilized across our most important struggles.

By organizing students and activists to fight for the institution that has the most direct impact on their lives, we will be activating their political will and building their political muscle for all of the fights to come. This training is intended for students who are newer to organizing and who may not have leadership positions in their campaigns yet, but are ready to become more involved.

Selected students will participate in a *FREE* 6 week training cohort. They will be trained to use belonging, culture, and storytelling to build intergenerational coalitions, across differences, and prepare to mobilize, intervene, and transform society for the common good. We’ll do so by learning how to follow corporate money, map power on campus, tell persuasive stories to get messaging across, and center community-based solutions! We’ll focus on environmental, human rights, economic, and social impacts associated with corporatization and privatization of education and campus communities. Before the training is over, participants will have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the creation of their own campaign, with the support of UnKoch My Campus and the Generation Common Good team.

The training will be virtual and will meet through variety of mediums, including Zoom, Slack, and emails between the weeks of June 19th and August 7th, 2023. Specific dates/time TBD.
