APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 28, 2019
The Annual Alexis Levitin Bilingual Reading Series runs throughout the conference during the day, and occasionally at an off-site location or in the evening hours. Readers are organized into sessions during which each reader has a strict 12 minutes to present their work. Readers are listed in the conference program, and participation in the Bilingual Readings Series is a significant and essential part of the conference programming.
To apply for the Bilingual Readings, simply fill out the form below, being sure to attach a one-page sample and a 100-word synopsis of the piece that you intend to read. This can be a rough draft, but will assist ALTA staff in forming logical groups of readers.
Given the high volume of submissions to participate in the Bilingual Readings (just over 50% of applications are accepted each year), and the frequency of readers cancelling, we hope that you will only apply if you are certain that you will be attending the conference. (We’re aware that “life happens,” and some people will have to cancel for a variety of valid reasons, but if you’re unsure at this moment if you’ll be attending at all, we’d prefer that you don’t apply and leave that slot for a translator who will definitely be at the conference.)
Anyone may apply to participate in the Bilingual Readings Series, though preference is given to current ALTA members (to check your membership status, join, or renew, please visit: www.literarytranslators.org/about/join). Submissions may not include self-translation, and must be texts translated INTO English from any other language. Readings must be conducted at least partially in the source language, in addition to English.
If your translation is from a play or screenplay, we encourage you to involve other people as actors, rather than reading all the parts yourself—though of course you are welcome to do so if you wish. Either way, your reading should adhere to the 12-minute time limit. In keeping with this year's conference theme, Sight and Sound, proposals for excerpts of translations of graphic literature, to be read with accompanying projections, are especially encouraged!
For guidelines regarding writing your bio, please view this page: http://bit.ly/2VN2io7
NOTE: If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available time slots, preference will be given to readers who are NOT participating in any other conference sessions, to current ALTA members, and to readers who did NOT participate in the Bilingual Readings series at the 2018 ALTA Conference. (To check your membership status, join, or renew, please visit: www.literarytranslators.org/about/join.) Only ONE application per individual will be considered. If you submit more than one application, only the last proposal will be considered.
All participants in the Bilingual Readings series MUST register for the conference.
ATTENDEES MAY ONLY PARTICIPATE IN TWO CONFERENCE SESSIONS TOTAL (INCLUDING BILINGUAL READINGS).
Bilingual Reading applications are for INDIVIDUAL translators, not for groups. To propose a group reading session, please use the Conference Session Proposal form here: https://goo.gl/forms/NlYj0RdqPx3mHHCn2. The deadline for session proposals is April 15, 2019.
