Costa Mesa Return to School Health Concerns; At Home Learning
Mesa Nation:

On Tuesday, October 27, the Newport Mesa Unified School District voted 7-0 in favor of students returning to school beginning Monday, November 9 in a hybrid schedule. In a hybrid schedule, students will be on campus for two days a week and will receive instruction via Zoom on the other three days.

In anticipation of re-opening in the future and students returning to campus in person in two smaller cohorts, A and B, we are also preparing another option for students and families that may still have concerns about specific health/risk factors unique to the student or family.

Previously, in September, we had sent a similar survey. Recognizing that family situations are fluid and may have changed over the past month, we wanted to identify families' current needs. If you had already completed the previous survey, you have already received this follow-up and there is no need to complete the survey again.

This At-Home Learning Cohort would keep qualified students on an at home learning model that would continue to include synchronous, live Zoom classes, as well as asynchronous/independent learning depending on the class structure. Students would remain in their current schedule, but would be remain at home to connect with their classes.

The expectations for this At-Home Learning model are:

- Either the student or a family member has specialized health needs that would put them in a high risk situation if the student were to return to campus at this time. (usually a short-term situation)

- The student will be expected to access the curriculum and complete the coursework in an independent, online, and distance learning format. Students will also be expected to maintain positive attendance and grades.

- Due to the health and safety factors, the student will not be participating in any extracurricular school activities that would necessitate the student being in person, i.e. Athletics, Drama productions, Music performances, ASB activities, etc.

Please indicate below if you are in need of an accommodation for your student’s and/or family’s health needs.

Thank you,

Costa Mesa High School and Middle School Administration

I am requesting that my student be placed in the alternative cohort that would keep them on a distance learning model that would continue to include synchronous, live Zoom classes, as well as asynchronous/independent learning. *
I understand that while my student is in this alternative cohort to remain on distance learning, that they will not be able to participate in any extracurricular activities or athletics that would necessitate them coming to campus in person. *
