Description: Amanda Wingfield is a faded remnant of Southern gentility who now lives in a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and her daughter, Laura, who has a physical handicap and debilitating shyness. The father has left home; Tom supports his mother and sister with a shoe-factory job he finds unbearable. When Amanda convinces Tom to bring home from his workplace a “gentleman caller” for Laura, the illusions that Tom, Amanda, and Laura have each created in order to make life bearable collapse about them. A drama of great tenderness, charm, and beauty, THE GLASS MENAGERIE is an icon of the American theater.

Character Breakdown
  • Amanda Wingfield, somewhere in her 40’s-50’s
A faded Southern belle who grew up in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, abandoned by her husband, and who is trying to raise her two children under harsh financial conditions. Amanda yearns for the comforts of her youth and also longs for her children to have the same comforts, but her devotion to them has made her – as she admits at one point – almost “hateful” towards them.

  • Tom Wingfield, early 20’s/then older… but also ageless
Amanda’s son and the narrator of the play. Tom works at a shoe warehouse to support his family but is frustrated by his job and aspires to be a poet. He struggles to write, all the while being sleep-deprived and irritable. Yet, he escapes from reality through nightly excursions to the movies. Tom feels both obligated toward yet burdened by his family and longs to escape for more.

  • Laura Wingfield, 20's-30's
Amanda’s daughter and Tom’s elder sister. A childhood illness has given her one leg that is slightly longer than the other, and she has a mental fragility and an inferiority complex that has isolated her from the outside world. She has created a world of her own symbolized by her collection of glass figurines. The unicorn may represent Laura because it is unique and fragile.

  • Jim O’Connor, 20's-30's
An old high school acquaintance of Tom and Laura. Jim was a popular athlete and actor during his days at Soldan High School. Subsequent years have been less kind to Jim; by the time of the play’s action, he is working as a shipping clerk at the same shoe warehouse as Tom. His hope to shine again is conveyed by his study of public speaking, radio engineering, and ideas of self-improvement that appear related to those of Dale Carnegie.

Southeast Alabama Community Theatre

Code of Conduct

Employees - Volunteers - Parents - Students

Theater is art.  The work may be challenging, experimental, exploratory, and bold.  Freedom of expression is the essence of theatre.  Southeast Alabama Community Theatre (SEACT) teams with its volunteers and employees to participate in all aspects of theatre. SEACT’s creative spaces must be safe and supportive for everyone.  The spaces where SEACT’s work and activities occur are many:  its offices, auditions, rehearsals, staging and technical activities, late nights, public performances, and even parties.  The boundaries between SEACT’s work and its social activities are blurred, which requires clear policies about what is and is not permitted when SEACT is involved.  To assure that SEACT’s work and activities are inclusive, inviting, and safe, SEACT has adopted this Code of Conduct to govern all of SEACT’s endeavors, participants, and spaces.

Discrimination, Harassment, and Bullying

As a community organization SEACT aspires to maintain an environment where all employees, volunteers, and students may participate in its activities, and while doing so enjoy freedom from discrimination, harassment, and bullying of any kind.  In keeping with its policies against discrimination, harassment, and bullying, SEACT prohibits any conduct and communications that violate these policies.

Participation in the work and fun of SEACT is without regard and SEACT does not discriminate on the basis of actual or perceived race, creed, color, religion, gender, alienage or national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, age, disability or handicap, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, and veteran status.  SEACT has zero tolerance for any such discrimination against its volunteers, employees, and students.

Harassment may include, but is not limited to, abusive conduct and language (oral or written); obscene or suggestive remarks; or comments and communications which are demeaning with respect to race, religion, ethnic or national origin, physical characteristics or abilities, appearance, family or parental situation, sex, sexual orientation, or gender (including such communications on the internet, or social networking sites, via email, through text message, or on personal blogs, whether or not it originates from a place where SEACT is operating).

Bullying is defined as unwanted, aggressive behavior (threatening, intimidating, or demeaning) that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.  Bullying may include any written, verbal, or implied communications (including communications on the internet, or social networking sites, via email, through text message, or on personal blogs, whether or not it originates from a place where SEACT is operating).

Other Prohibited Conduct

The following list of such prohibited conduct and communications is not all-inclusive—it provides only some examples:

Dishonesty/lying/insubordination

Fighting or unsafe activity with potential to result in physical harm

Stealing/willful destruction/vandalism/theft

Disrespect

Harassment/bullying/hazing/racism/intimidation of any kind through physical or verbal intimidation to include foul language

Sexual harassment

Inappropriate public displays of affection (kissing, inappropriate touching, etc.)

Misuse of technology and/or accessing or the display of inappropriate online content at any place of SEACT’s activities or related to SEACT and its employees or participants in any way

Taking still images, video/audio recording of a community member without their knowledge or consent, or of SEACT’s creative content without the consent of SEACT

Use of SEACT’s logo without permission or the creation of fake SEACT or community member social media accounts without permission

With respect to inappropriate contact, if touching is not creatively required when acting in a scene, when in doubt, do not touch anyone.  Hugging and intimacy can imply feelings of intimacy or affection that are not shared.  Use proper names when talking to anyone involved with SEACT, not pet names like “baby,” “darling,” sweetheart,” and the like.  Do not comment judgmentally about anyone’s clothing, body, sex appeal, race, appearance or personality.

Stage Intimacy

Personal touching, kissing, theatrical intimacy, otherwise inappropriate language, suggestive costumes, and similar creative risk-taking, may be called for in a script or by a director during performances, in keeping with creative content. SEACT will undertake performances in such circumstances only when it can do so responsibly and in keeping with community standards.

Actors and participants in such performances take personal risks, and they must be able to do so in an environment that is safe and encouraging, and will consent in advance to participating.  Actors in such performances will not be minors, and such performances will not occur in the presence of minors who are volunteers working on, or acting in, any production, without the written consent of their parents.

At and in advance of auditions for any roles that include personal touching, kissing, theatrical intimacy, otherwise inappropriate language, suggestive costumes, and similar creative risk-taking, the Director for that show will clearly explain and describe the expectations and boundaries for such roles.  Then, for any such rehearsals and performances, the Director in consultation with SEACT’s Executive Director and any given participant shall determine, disclose, and enforce mature, safe and respectful standards to apply to all participants.  In no event will any person who refuses to participate in such activities be subjected to retaliation or harassment of any kind, and any such person will be eligible for further participation in SEACT events in good standing.

Reporting

If you believe you have been the target or victim of any words, conduct, or content that violate this Code of Conduct, or if you are present, witnessed, or experienced when such offenses occur, you may report your concerns, complaints, and experiences to one or more of the following people:

Your concerns and complaints will be treated respectfully. SEACT will promptly and thoroughly investigate any report of any alleged violation of this Code of Conduct as confidentially, quickly, and discreetly as is practicable.  Such an investigation may include a private interview of the person reporting a complaint and discussions with the alleged violator(s) of this Code of Conduct.  SEACT’s intention is to determine if this Code of Conduct has been breached and to determine the actions necessary to respond to such violations, which can include counseling, warnings, suspensions and terminations. SEACT will report the results of its investigation to the volunteer or employee who made the complaint.

Parents & Minors

It is SEACT’s desire for every student involved to have the best possible experience. SEACT’s goal is to provide clear and transparent communication with students and parents, and a safe and enjoyable environment for every activity. To that end, SEACT asks that students and parents review the Code of Conduct together, and discuss any concerns.

COMPLIANCE WITH THIS CODE OF CONDUCT IS MANDATORY AND A CONDITION OF EACH EMPLOYEE’S EMPLOYMENT BY SEACT AND EACH VOLUNTEER’S PARTICIPATION IN SEACT’S ACTIVITIES.  EMPLOYEES AND VOLUNTEERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO RAISE ANY CONCERNS OR QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS CODE OF CONDUCT OR ABOUT ANY BEHAVIOR THAT MAY VIOLATE THIS CODE OF CONDUCT WITH SEACT’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.

Thank you for your participation with SEACT, and for your love and commitment to the performing arts in our community.
