Equine Retirement Survey
If you've received this link without context, hello! I'm Amanda, and I write about horses and life at www.beljoeor.com/blog. In 2018, I've been writing about horse finances, and for an upcoming entry in that series, I'd like to write about what retiring a horse costs. My own horse is nearing retirement, so this is of particular interest to me.

If you have any questions or additional feedback, feel free to email me at beljoeor@gmail.com. And thanks for your help!
Do you currently own a horse?
Have you ever retired a horse from work?
Why did you decide to retire your horse?
How much did you plan in advance for your horse's retirement? If you've never retired a horse, how much are you currently planning? Please estimate your answer on this scale, where 1 is "I was totally unprepared and scrambling" to 5 is "I had a plan very nearly from day 1."
What is your horse's retirement situation? (If you've retired multiple horses, or if your horse's situation has changed, please feel free to choose multiple options.)
Did you feel financially prepared for your horse's retirement? Please estimate your answer on this scale, where 1 is "It took me by surprise and I pay for it out of my regular cash flow" to 5 is "I had a separate account and/or income stream set up specifically for retirement."
If you've never retired a horse, but currently own a horse that you may retire someday, how financially prepared do you feel for that retirement? Please estimate your answer on this scale, where 1 is "I have no financial plans and will probably pay for it out of my regular cash flow" to 5 is "I have a separate account and/or income stream set up specifically for retirement."
If you have already retired your horse, or are making plans to retire your horse, could you please estimate costs PER MONTH according to your horse's situation. Include ALL COSTS (board, feed, vet bills, shoeing, incidentals). If you have retired more than one horse, please estimate costs for one horse in one situation (but feel free to fill out information for multiple situations if you have explored or used those). For example, feel free to fill out a cost for each type of retirement, but for costs, imagine the cost of one horse in that situation. Please use actual information that you have direct experience with - not guesstimates for a situation you haven't used or investigated.
