Elijah's Promise Food Recovery Internship
Are you a high schooler interested in helping your community? Then you are just who we need! The new Food Recovery Internship at Elijah’s Promise in New Brunswick, NJ is looking for New Jersey high school students who want to make a difference in their schools. Do you know that 1 in 5 children in the United States are food insecure, yet more than a third of all the food in this country is thrown away every year?

We need your help to make sure that re-usable food, like unopened milk cartons, packaged items, and unpeeled fruit served in your schools is "recovered," staying out of the landfill and helping feed others. You can help take care of our planet while also taking care of our community!

As part of the Food Recovery Internship, you will receive training, tools, and resources to support you through creating School Food Waste and Recovery Programs in your school districts. The ultimate goal is to convert what would be food waste into food surplus by setting up systems to redistribute unopened leftovers. These leftovers can be used after school, for students to take home, or be donated to outside organizations who help feed others.

Through four webinars and continuing support from December 2019 through June 2020, you will learn how to organize, advocate, and communicate on the relationship between food waste and food security. You will develop and execute plans for your school district to make changes in the cafeteria and institute new programs, such as Share Tables, make plans for how surplus food will be reused after lunch ends, and create an outreach or education project about your Food Waste and Recovery Program.
