IU-SOC is a free student volunteer-powered clinic which serves the near east side community through the services of Medicine, Pharmacy, Legal, Social Work, Dental, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Nursing. As front desk volunteers, you have the privilege of acting as the "face" of the clinic. The clinic primarily serves a racially, culturally, and economically diverse community on the near east side of Indianapolis where 50% of residents live below the poverty line. The health needs of this community are widely reported to be unmet for a variety of reasons such as cost of healthcare, lack of transportation, and lack of a primary care provider. There is also a fear of the medical community to some extent and an increased number of uninsured due to poverty and unemployment.
IU-SOC is open every Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and Timmy Global Health at IUPUI provides front-desk volunteers each week from 8:45 am to 2:00 pm. The clinic is located at Neighborhood Fellowship Church (3102 10th St, Indianapolis, IN 46201). All general volunteers are expected to volunteer one Saturday every 1-2 months. Please note that when you sign up for a shift, you are expected to be available for the entire time unless you discuss it with us in advance. Since the shifts are long, we definitely do not expect you to sign-up to volunteer every week. We also ask that you provide at least one week notice in the event of a cancellation, unless it is an emergency.
