2019 Jenkins Youth Leadership Award Nominee Form

History of William C. (Bill) Jenkins
A teacher, a mayor, a historian and a classic example of an unassuming, genuine, community-minded man. These best describe the spirit of William C. (Bill) Jenkins, for whom the Scottsdale Leadership Youth Award is named. As a 29-year educator at Scottsdale High School, Bill worked tirelessly for his students in the Social Sciences department and as their student government advisor. He was visionary and also sought to bring real-life value to his classrooms with lessons about "the first time on your own", enlightening students about life on their own, their first venture into renting an apartment and other well-timed information they needed as they left high school and life as a child.

When his community called, Bill answered as a Councilman from 1966 to 1974 and as Scottsdale’s Mayor from 1974-1980. He blended teaching and community service by riding his bike at the end of the teaching day, across the street to City Hall. In the evenings, he graded papers and answered calls from constituents sitting at a modest desk in his home. Bill understood his duties to both loves and his responsibilities as a youth leader and community steward.

It is this spirit of tireless devotion to education and to community that the Jenkins Youth Award seeks 11th and 12th graders as the next Jenkins Youth Award recipient. How do you aspire to improve your life, the lives of your classmates and energy at your school, to grow your knowledge and to give back to the community?
