2025 Job Application: Studio Manager for RED Metal

We are hiring a part-time administrative, Studio Manager, position at RED Metal. We are looking to hire one individual to support our artist and owner, Rachel David, with client management, business operations, gallery contracts, and public projects and grants. The Studio Manager position is for someone who is prepared and able to be Rachel’s “Boss”. She needs someone to work remotely alongside her and manage deadlines, assignments, communications, and administration. This essential role allows Rachel to reserve her time for design and production so she and the business can excel. One of our goals as a business is to keep Rachel’s focus on making work!

We are a very small, queer, anarchist, woman-owned metalworking and art business, with recognition in galleries and artist rosters locally, nationally, and across the world. 

This position offers the flexibility to make it what you want. The nature of this business is adaptability. Some months and years there is more work–other times there are dry spells. We are driven by commissions that we are hired for or exhibits that we are preparing for. There is significant administrative work to do within the budget that we have laid out below. During dry times, this position is best for someone who is driven to find tasks for themselves and is able to work independently and interested in trying to find more work for the shop.

Training will begin as soon as possible -- Anticipating by/on June 1st.

Position Details:

  • $25 an hour, as an independent contractor (1099)
  • Average of 8 hours a week ($800/month) 
  • ---- We can commit to a minimum of 4 hours a week ($400/month).
  • ---- Depending on our business flow, this may require you to self-task and manage your own administrative agenda. At times, we may or may not be able to accommodate more hours than this. In such circumstances, this would be discussed in advance with everyone's best interest in mind.
  • ---- We expect to offer a maximum of 16 hours a week, based on project flow. 
  • ---- At times, this will be needed with planning and discussion, in advance.
  • Position is primarily remote, with a preference for independent travel to Waynesville, NC and Asheville, NC on a semi-regular basis.
  • ---- An ideal candidate will be available for regional travel for short-term stays to support with promotional efforts, shows, and exhibitions
  • Long commitment is needed to accommodate the learning curve with a 3 and 6 month check-in before committing to a 3-year term

  • Ability to track your hours independently or through a shared app
  • Proficient writing and editing skills
  • ​​Ability to manage online all platforms --- Facebook, Instagram, Google Drive, Square POS, Square-online web platform, and Canva 
  • Access to your own transportation

Our Preferences:
  • Fluency in metal work business or art / small business management
  • ---- Art sales, art value, customer service, online platforms, markets, and workflow
  • Ability to make compelling graphic displays for flyers, business cards, and pamphlets
  • Willingness and ability to manage and boost our pre-existing social media platforms–facebook and instagram–with potential to expand to YouTube and other platforms
  • Interest in professional development trainings and opportunities
  • Ability to work unconventional hours, like nights or weekends
  • ---- Either remotely or on-site loading at craft fairs or the studio
  • Brainstorming and organizing community engagement opportunities
  • Willingness to get dirty in the shop with metalwork finishing processes (like patina, cleaning, and waxing), as well as help with packing, shipping, and taking photos of artwork for online platforms
  • Willingness to participate in studio photo sessions and potentially take classes to do our own studio photography 
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Interest in professional development workshops/ classes
