We'd love for volunteers in Honolulu to help us set up the event on Wednesday and Thursday July 5 & 6, to help us and artists during the public event Friday, Saturday and Sunday July 7-9, and to deinstall on Monday July 10.
As with all APAC Culture Labs, ʻAe Kai will be an interactive, participatory museum experience: part festival, part exhibition, part experiment. It will also be collaboratively curated, built on partnerships with scholars and academics, and local and national artists and arts organizations.
You can see the full list of artists and learn more at our website:http://smithsonianapa.org/aekai/
NOTE: This form hasn't been working consistently on Facebook browser. If you're using that, please open http://smithsonianapa.org/volunteer from Safari or Chrome. Thanks!
The Visitor Assistance position is a docent role, providing general information, directions and helpful background to visitors of the ʻAe Kai Culture Lab. This position requires individuals to have strong communication skills, learn quickly and to be able to provide clear directions to visitors at the ʻAe Kai Culture Lab. Visitor Assistance will require individuals to have an approachable and outgoing demeanor, and enjoy working with diverse people.
The Event Set-Up/Breakdown position will be an opportunity work directly with Smithsonian staff to do hands on work as we prepare for and set-up and breakdown multiple aspects of the event. This position requires individuals to have strong communication skills and to be able to follow directions as provided by Smithsonian staff. This position may require heavy lifting and use of construction tools.
The Street Team Member will take part in community outreach and promotion through social media and material distribution of posters and postcards around strategic locations throughout Honolulu (+ neighboring areas). This position is ideal for those who may not be available for a full 4-hour shift during the event dates (including set-up and de-installation), but can distribute materials and promote for a few hours at a time before and during the event.
We will accommodate volunteer position preferences as much as possible, but require volunteers to be open to any position.
LOCATION: The ʻAe Kai Culture Lab will take place at the former site of Foodland in Ala Moana Center.
SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS: We request that volunteers be available for 4 hour shifts scheduled between the dates of Wednesday, July 5th, to Monday, July 10th, based on availability.
TRAINING: There will be brief informational sessions, dates and locations TBA. Informational sessions will also be available via telephone for those unavailable to attend in person.
