Whole Grade Acceleration Request
Thank you for reaching out to advocate on behalf of your learner.
Before continuing, please read the district’s requirements for whole grade acceleration (IKEA-RA):
Whole Grade Acceleration or “skipping” a grade is not appropriate for most students, and is ultimately the decision of the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) after the following steps have been taken:
a. A request for consideration must be submitted to the Office of Gifted and Advanced Learning by completing a request form. While it may be initiated by a parent/guardian, school staff, or the student, approval must be given by the parent/guardian prior to moving to the assessment stage.
b. Students whose parent/guardian has approved their participation in the assessment will be assessed via a proven metric of ability by the Office of Gifted and Advanced Learning - currently this is the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Students need a nationally normed composite assessment result in the 90th percentile or higher in order to be considered for grade acceleration.
c. Students being considered for grade acceleration into grades 3 and beyond must also qualify with scores in the 90th percentile or higher in both ELA and Mathematics via a nationally normed achievement assessment (examples include but are not limited to PARCC, MCAP, i-Ready, MAP, PSAT, SAT…).
d. Consultation with parents/guardians, school leadership, and the Office of Gifted and Advanced Learning around the social-emotional readiness of an academically qualified student must take place before an official recommendation for acceleration can be made by the Office of Gifted and Advanced Learning to the CAO.
All requests for whole grade acceleration must be submitted between the first Monday in June and the first Monday in October in order to prevent ongoing changes to classroom assignments and scheduling.
If you still wish to submit a request for whole grade acceleration, please complete the form below.
