You Don’t Need to Spend a Lot on a Pricey Gaming Laptop

Any gaming laptop that costs thousands of dollars should be able to play the newest, most taxing games smoothly and consistently on high graphics settings. But you don’t need to shell out more than $1,500 to get a great laptop capable of playing your favorite games, and higher price tags do not guarantee better performance.

We’ve tested many gaming laptops in the past, and in 2023, we tested models costing up to $3,000, with the newest generation of Nvidia’s 40-series GPUs and Intel’s 13th-generation processors. Our findings have remained the same over the years: High-end gaming laptops packed with the most-powerful hardware still don’t offer enough performance benefits over more-affordable options. In some cases, they even perform worse.

Why we don’t recommend expensive gaming laptops

You can spend as much money on a high-end gaming laptop as you can on a used car. But you probably shouldn’t: Gaming laptops are not great long-term investments. Their graphics and processors typically can’t be upgraded. And as new video games come out, demanding higher system requirements all the time, the fixed hardware in your laptop will eventually fall behind.

Compared with budget options, expensive gaming laptops should have better processors and displays that produce higher-quality graphics and performance. They should also have better fans and cooling, nicer speakers, and a slimmer design. But powerful hardware requires, well, a lot of power. Power generates heat, and more power generates more heat. As a result, none of the expensive laptops we tested could keep their internal components or external surfaces from overheating. And many of them didn’t yield frame rates or graphics quality adequate enough to justify their high prices.

Our pick for the best cheap gaming laptop can play most of the newest titles at medium or higher settings, at 1080p resolution, with consistently high frame rates—and it normally costs just $1,000. In some tests, it actually outperformed the Razer Blade 15, which was the most expensive laptop we evaluated. For instance, when we ran Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy on ultra settings on both laptops, our budget pick maintained higher average frame rates than the Blade 15. It also stayed cooler than any of the more expensive models we tested.

This laptop has the newest generation of hardware, and it performs better than some of the most expensive models we tested. It maintains great frame rates for smooth gameplay, and it stays quiet and cool to the touch.

Why should you care about your laptop overheating?

When the internal components of a laptop generate too much heat, they can slow gaming performance and shorten the lifespan of the machine. And hot external surfaces can be more than just uncomfortable to the touch. They can also cause tissue damage (PDF) with prolonged contact, as well as erythema ab igne (EAI), a blotchy, chronic skin condition that in rare cases is associated with some cancers.

During our tests, we measure internal temperatures using HWMonitor Pro, and we record external temperatures using an infrared thermometer pointed at different surface points of the laptop. We automatically dismiss any laptop that exceeds the maximum temperature safe for skin contact or PC hardware. And we adhere to the following temperature limits, based on research published by NASA (PDF), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (PDF), and operating specifications from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD

Should you buy a gaming laptop?

A gaming laptop gives you the ability to play video games from anywhere on the planet. But, depending on your needs, it might not be the perfect solution: Even the slimmest gaming laptops aren’t as portable as we’d like, and they’re not well suited to productivity. Depending on your needs, a gaming laptop might also be impractical standing in as the only computer you own.

Compared with every other type of laptop we recommend, gaming laptops have bulkier designs. Most of the models we test are built with 15- or 16-inch displays, and they typically take up too much space to use in a standard airplane seat. We rarely see laptops in this category that weigh less than 4 pounds, and they also come with big, bulky chargers that can be cumbersome to lug around.

They’re also less ideal for productivity and casual use because they have awful battery lives. On average, our picks last roughly five hours on a single charge when used only for light tasks, like web browsing, and video games will drain the laptop more rapidly. You can also expect to see major frame rate drops, stuttering, and other performance issues when gaming on battery power.

If you want the best gaming experience, and you don’t need a computer you can travel with, you’re better off buying or building a gaming desktop. They’re more powerful than laptops at the same price, and they’re easier to upgrade down the line to meet the demands of newer and more-taxing games. But the ability to play games in any room of your house, on a trip, or when you’re killing time out in the world is compelling—as long as you’re not too far away from a power outlet. And this is why we recommend a cheap gaming laptop for most people.

Lithium-Ion Batteries with IP65 Ratings

As lithium-ion batteries become more popular, various standards and certifications are being created to ensure the safety of consumers. Each of these standards puts the batteries through rigorous testing to see if they will continue to operate optimally, even in rough conditions. Ingress Protection (IP) ratings were created to signal how well a device was protected against foreign bodies. Battle Born Batteries were exposed to various levels of testing and given an IP65 rating, showing that they are completely dust-proof and water-resistant.

What Does Ingress Protection (IP) Mean?

Over the last 50 years, technological innovation has hit its stride. Everyday new research creates opportunities for new technology that quickly comes to market. With this rapid pace of advancement, consumers were struggling to keep up with safety specifications and requirements. Standards were then created and implemented to quickly signal to consumers which devices had passed the strictest quality and safety testing.

In 1976, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) created the Ingress Protection (IP) rating system to “standardize how to classify electrical enclosures and mechanical casings against ingresses such as dust and water particles.” Before these standards were created, many electronic and mechanical devices were labeled as “waterproof” and “dustproof”. These terms quickly became ambiguous, and consumers were unknowingly exposing their devices to damaging and potentially dangerous conditions.

IP Ratings utilized international standards to create a sliding scale that would quickly convey exactly how “waterproof” and “dustproof” a device really was. The higher this two-digit rating is, the more protected a particular device is from foreign bodies. To determine which rating each device receives, they are subjected to a series of tests. Each test gets progressively more intense in the exposure the device has to certain foreign bodies.

With the creation of IP Ratings, each electronic or mechanical device that receives a rating is exposed to the same exact testing conditions. This removed ambiguity and allowed consumers to deduce quickly and accurately just how “dustproof” and “waterproof” their devices are. Within the last few decades, IP Ratings have greatly increased manufacturer transparency, consumer safety, and overall piece of mind when adopting new technology.

Breaking Down IP Standards

To measure the effectiveness of an electronic device’s sealing against moisture and other foreign objects, IP Standards were established with a two-digit rating. For each digit, the higher the number, the better protected the device is. If a device has an X in place of one of the digits in the IP rating, the enclosure has not been tested for that specification yet.

First Digit – Intrusion Protection

In an IP rating, the first digit indicates the enclosure’s ability to protect against intrusion from solid foreign bodies. A hazardous situation can arise when dust, tools, fingers, or other objects come inContact with electrical components or circuitry.  This rating is determined on a scale from 0-6. The lower a rating is for intrusion protection, the more careful an individual needs to be when storing, using, or touching the device.

Second Digit – Moisture Protection

In an IP Rating, the second digit is used to indicate that ability of the enclosure to protect against moisture. This rating is determined on a scale from 0-9. The higher the rating a device receives, the more moisture it can withstand without breaking the seal and impacting the internal electronic components. Testing for moisture protection ranges from subjecting the device to condensation or other water droplets all the way to full submersion.

Estonia grid-scale BESS to come online in 2025 with LG batteries

It will come online at the start of 2025, when Estonia and the other Baltic countries Lithuania and Latvia will disconnect from Russia’s grid. The complex is located close to the border with Russia in the northeast of Estonia.

The procurement, launched in June last year, saw local firms Diotech OÜ and Solar Wheel OÜ win a joint tender with LG Energy Solution enlisted to supply the BESS units.

The BESS will participate in various electricity market activities but most importantly will help to cover the frequency containment reserve (FCR) need in the Baltics.

‘We are honoured to contribute to Eesti Energia’s energy plan for desynchronisation (disconnecting from Russia’s grid) in the Baltic countries,’ said Kyuwon Heo, Head of Grid ESS Europe at LG Energy Solution.

Estonia is targeting an exit from electricity production from shale gas and a 40% renewable energy mix by 2030.

The BESS is the first large-scale project in the country but smaller-scale projects are being supported through a grant programme, including a 4MW/8MWh BESS.

Eesti Energia and a consortium of private companies are also launching separate, large-scale pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) projects, though these would come online in the late 2020s.

NEC Article 706 for Energy Storage Systems

As photovoltaic (solar or PV) systems and Battle Born Batteries energy storage technologies continue to evolve, the NEC plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and functionality of these systems. The rapid adoption of lithium-ion energy storage systems, like the Battle Born Batteries Base Station, has necessitated the revision of existing regulations and the introduction of new requirements to address emerging challenges.

NEC Article 706 for Energy Storage Systems outlines regulations that are pertinent to solar-plus-storage

systems, specifically for energy storage systems integrated within normal operating conditions. NEC Article 706 mandates requirements such as ESS product listing, disconnecting means, installation specifications, DC voltage limits, circuit sizing, overcurrent protection, and charge control mandates. Notable provisions, in this article specifically, include an accessible disconnect for one- and two-family dwellings and a DC voltage ceiling of 100VDC, with provisions for higher voltages when live parts are inaccessible during routine maintenance.

NEC Article 705 & 690 Requirements | Interconnected Electric Power Production Sources

When a Battle Born energy storage system is interconnected with a primary power source, Article 705: Interconnected Electric Power Production Sources comes into play. This NEC regulation specifies conditions for interconnection, including equipment listing, automatic export cessation during power loss, micro-grid system definitions, and transitioning between modes. A newly introduced section, 705.13, addresses power control systems (PCS) requirements for limiting current and loading on busbars and conductors.  Breakers and fused disconnects need to be oversized by 125% of the max inverter output and the overall output of the renewable power source shall not exceed more than 120% of the main service panel bus rating, on load side connections. Line-side connections should be verified by the local building department in your area.

In cases where energy storage systems are charged by PV sources, NEC Article 690 for Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems and its amendments are applicable. Previously covering storage batteries, Article 690 now primarily pertains to PV-side requirements. It includes provisions for marking PV output conductors for polarity, enforcing rapid shutdown requirements to ensure safe operation during grid outages, and protecting utility crews from unsuspected power on the grid.

NEC Article 710 for Stand-Alone Energy Storage Systems

NEC Article 710 addresses stand-alone energy storage systems, like Battle Born Batteries’ residential off-grid and industrial solar systems, operating independently in “island mode,” encompassing off-grid and interactive hybrid backup power systems. The 710 article dictates inverter input and output circuit requirements, supply output provisions, and allows a single inverter to supply distribution panels. Notably, circuit breaker security for inverters and appropriate voltage and frequency for connected loads during “island mode” is emphasized.

The Latest Requirements for Energy Storage Systems from the NEC

In 2020, the National Electrical Code (NEC) made significant changes to its requirements for energy storage systems. Due to the increase in ESS, such as large-scale wind and solar systems used to generate power, the articles in the NEC were updated for the ever-evolving systems.

Article 706 requires that energy storage systems with a capacity greater than 1kWh [706.1] can provide power to the premises wiring system or a power distribution network [706.2]. Key points in this article include disconnecting means must meet the requirements laid out in Article 706.15(A)(1) through (3) as well as meeting the requirements of Part III and 706.15(B) through (D). The article also lays out its requirements for conductor sizing in 706.30, and sizing overcurrent protections in Article 240 [706.31(A)].

Any overcurrent protection devices for any DC portion must be listed for DC, and be equipped with the appropriate voltage, current, and interrupting rating for the application at hand per Article 706.31(C). Article 706.33(A) requires that the system must have provisions for charge control and adjustable means for control of charging must only be accessible to qualified personnel. If you’re using a system with flow batteries, they must comply with part V.

NEC Article 480 for Stationary Battery Installations

Let’s dive into the NEC regulations about stationary battery installations, particularly focusing on NEC Article 480. While Article 480 lays down the foundational electrical installation requirements for batteries, this analysis underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding beyond the scope of the code. Amendments introduced in the 2014 NEC are explored, emphasizing their significance in ensuring safe and efficient battery system design and deployment.

As advancements in energy storage technologies continue, the NEC plays a pivotal role in shaping regulations to ensure the safety and reliability of battery installations. Below we dive into the specifics of NEC Article 480, examining its requirements and subsequent amendments, and emphasizing the broader context necessary for robust battery system design.

Battery and Cell Terminations

The 2014 NEC introduced a new subsection focusing on battery and cell terminations (480.3). This addition underscores the critical importance of proper terminal connections. Addressing terminal corrosion, the requirement for applying antioxidant materials during installation is highlighted as a means to mitigate potential issues. Moreover, the code now explicitly mandates terminating conductors in ways that minimize strain on connections, aligning with good workmanship standards. Temperature and Ampacity Effects: The impact of temperature on charging rates and conductor ampacity is often overlooked. NEC 480.3(B) explicitly addresses this concern, requiring proper conductor sizing to accommodate ampacity losses under maximum temperature conditions. This adjustment, previously observed by experienced designers, is now formally mandated across installations.

Disconnecting Means

The need for a readily accessible disconnecting means for battery systems exceeding 50V nominal voltage is introduced in NEC 480.6(A). The requirement aligns with common NEC criteria for disconnects and includes provisions for remote activation, bolstering safety, and maintenance practices.

Insulation Support

NEC Article 480 outlines insulation support requirements based on battery nominal voltage and construction materials. Batteries with certain characteristics are exempt from additional insulation support, while stringent provisions are in place to ensure proper insulation in other cases.

Considering NEC Regulations for Battle Born Batteries Storage Systems

While NEC Article 480 serves as the foundation for battery installations, it is essential to acknowledge the broader considerations that impact safe and effective system design. The amendments introduced in the 2014 NEC highlight the evolving nature of battery technology and the NEC’s commitment to maintaining up-to-date safety standards. A commitment to high-quality engineering decisions that transcend code compliance is critical to establishing resilient and reliable battery systems. As batteries assume increasingly critical roles in diverse applications, a holistic approach to design, installation, and maintenance becomes imperative to ensure long-term safety and performance.

The 2 Best Cheap Gaming Laptops of 2024

Powerful gaming laptops can be wildly expensive, with some as much as $3,000. For that price, you can get a slim, light laptop with solid speakers, quiet fans, and high resolutions—in theory. But you don’t have to spend more than $1,500 to get a great gaming laptop, and most people probably shouldn’t. Cheaper laptops are being built with more powerful hardware all the time, and in 2023, we’re seeing more budget models that include high refresh rate displays, slimmer builds, and the newest generation of graphics cards and processors.

We spent months testing laptops for this guide, including against more expensive models costing all the way up to $3,000, and found that the affordable Gigabyte Aorus 15 (BMF-52US383SH) was the only laptop of the 12 we tested that provided consistently good performance while staying cool inside and out.

Our pick

This laptop has the newest generation of hardware and performs better than some of the most expensive models we tested. It maintains great frame rates for smooth gameplay and stays quiet and cool to the touch.

Budget pick

The Acer Nitro 5 is the best inexpensive gaming laptop we considered, but it won’t play the newest, most demanding games as well as our top pick. It also has half the storage, and its screen isn’t as nice.

This model is identical to the AN515-44-R99Q but has a four-core Intel processor instead of a six-core AMD processor. We recommend it if the AMD model is unavailable, or if this one happens to be cheaper.

Our pick

This laptop has the newest generation of hardware and performs better than some of the most expensive models we tested. It maintains great frame rates for smooth gameplay and stays quiet and cool to the touch.

The Gigabyte Aorus 15 (BMF-52US383SH) surpassed all of the other models we tested with consistent, high-quality performance, and it only costs $1,000 at full price (we’ve previously seen it discounted to $800). It has quiet fans and a high refresh rate screen, and it averaged about 90 frames per second on high and ultra settings in most of our gaming tests—even with ray-tracing features enabled.

If you want the cheapest possible laptop that will get decent performance in games, get the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-44-R99Q or AN515-55-53AG. Because it has less-powerful graphics hardware, the Nitro 5 can’t play the absolute newest, most demanding games at their highest settings, and it doesn’t support VR, but it’s powerful enough to play older games or less demanding modern titles. The Nitro 5 keeps cool enough without blasting its fans, it has a responsive keyboard and trackpad, and it’s easy to upgrade. But compared with our top pick, the Nitro 5 has a dimmer screen at a lower, 60 Hz refresh rate. It also offers less storage for games and comes with a ton of bloatware installed.
