Since 2009, Mentee Muslimah has brought Muslim female youth into a communal, safe space, to promote confidence through dialogue, entrepreneurship and self-defense. Through an extensive application process, highly motivated and dedicated young Muslim women between the ages of 13-19 are selected annually from the five boroughs. These young women have the opportunity to engage in weekly workshops throughout the summer.
Mentee Muslimah consists of four main components:
SELF-DEFENSE:Used as a modality of confidence building. Participants will learn basic self defense techniques against both physical and verbal assaults which will prepare them against common attacks. Includes pressure points, grabs, kicks, chokes, etc.
DIALOGUE & LEADERSHIP BUILDING:Young women will have the opportunity to engage in conversations ranging from college and career to body image and hijab. SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP:Participants will go through an extensive training in service or product development. Every year, Malikah partners up with a local business and the mentees create a plan to promote that business.
MENTORSHIP:Upon successful completion of the Mentee Muslimah program, each mentee will be paired with a mentor who will be a college student pursuing a similar field of interest of the mentee. They will not only be there for guidance and advice, but also nurture a sense of sisterhood and community.
There is a fee of $40 that covers program costs which include equipment for self defense, program wide trip, and the graduation ceremony for the mentees. If you have financial issues, please do not hesitate to contact us at email@example.com.
