Volunteer as a mentor for youth in the 4Y Program in Yellowknife
Sign up to volunteer as a mentor in the 4Y Program! After filling out this application, we'll reach out to you to set up an interview with a staff member of the 4Y Program. You'll have to complete a criminal records check with a vulnerable sector search, sign the confidentiality agreement, and complete your 'matching' questionnaire, which will help to connect you with a youth with similar interests!

We will ask for two references, and then provide training to ensure cultural sensitivity and a better awareness of FASD.

For some more information: the 4Y Program is a support and navigation program for children and youth in Yellowknife (ages 11 -29) who have a disability caused by prenatal alcohol exposure, or who are diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Youth participants benefit from one on one support from their program facilitators, working on skills such as money management, employment, and cooking, and learning about harm reduction, drugs and alcohol, sexual health, and positive mental health. Participants also spend each week on a physical activity, such as a sport or going to the gym, because this promotes positive mental health.

Developing healthy, mentorship relationships with adults in the community is very important for all youth. Youth participants in this program really benefit from working one on one with adults, similar to 'Big Brother Big Sisters' program.

In this role, you would be expected to meet with the youth for 1-2 hours a week for a minimum of 6 months, however longer term, 1+ years, is preferred.
