Why is this research being done?
In accordance with the expressed work of ATL Parent Like A Boss, Inc. to...
1. Center Black family voices and experiences in conversations with existing research on “best practices” for educational growth and family engagement;
2. Use a social-justice framework to learn, create and share research with Black families;
3. Enhance Black family and community literacy, as well as self/social awareness through community-based dialogue.

We are conducting community-based collaborative research with individuals and families on the relationship between race, culture, joy, and play. Broadly, the data collected through our PLAY DAY Series will be used to address the following questions:

1. What sensory-motor and social-emotional skills as well as cultural literacies are cultivated through play?
2. How does play equip people with the language to identify emotional, visceral responses to social experiences?
3. What is the role of play in transmitting cultural legacies and traditions?

Additionally, the research collected through our PLAY DAY Series pre-, post-, and follow-up surveys will be used to address the following questions:
1. What is the relationship between anti-racism, Black child play, and community-organizing?
2. How do we identify and define anti-racist play?
3. How do we measure the efficacy of anti-racist play in classroom, domestic, and community- based learning spaces?

What are the research activities?
We will be using the charts co-constructed throughout the PLAY DAY Series as well as any written, digital, verbal feedback and commentary collected throughout the session. We are also collecting written, digital, and verbal responses to our PLAY DAY Series pre-, post-, and follow-up survey questions.

What are the possible risks or benefits associated with this research study?
There is no direct benefit for participating in this study. The risks of participating are rare and unlikely. Unless otherwise noted below with your full permission, any names used in descriptions or publications will be first names only.

Who will know about my participation in this research study?
Data without identifying information beyond first names may be used in ATL Parent Like A Boss, Inc. research documents, publications, and presentations.

Is my participation in this research study voluntary?
Your participation in this research study is completely voluntary. You may leave the project at any time. Whether or not you take part in this research project or if you decide to leave the project after you have accepted to participate will not have any consequences whatsoever. If you decide you no longer wish to participate after you have signed the consent form, you should contact our CEO, Ariana Brazier at 205-821-5016. All data collected up to the point of withdrawal may be used by the investigators.
