Loyola University Chicago has made a "safe-haven" promise to protect migratory birds on campus. Despite this, over 1,000 birds were killed hitting windows at the Lakeshore Campus since 2012. The most deadly buildings are the Damen Student Center and Norville Athletic Center.
Up to a billion birds die in collisions with glass each year in the United States (American Bird Conservancy). Chicago is one of the worst cities in the US for bird window collisions because of its location along a bird migration route (Cornell Lab of Ornithology).
A solution to so many bird deaths on campus is to apply a window film to the glass. Window film is a pattern of stickers developed to make windows visible for birds and attractive to people.
We require that a plan for applying window film be presented to the student body by December 31, 2019. Installation must be started this Spring before migration season.
Protection of the environment and the care of our common home is the fourth Universal Apostolic Preference of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). As Pope Francis said, “A Christian who doesn’t safeguard creation, is a Christian who isn’t concerned with God’s work.”
