The Uneasy World of Edward Gorey

A 90-Minute Talk with Becky Carpenter

"Some tiny creature, mad with wrath, is coming nearer on the path."

A sense of dread, a shiver down the spine, a macabre curiosity. This is what happens to most when they read the tales of Edward Gorey. Join former university professor and Osher lecturer Becky Carpenter for a journey into the life, the art, and the peculiar universe this famous writer and illustrator created.

We'll investigate why doomed children, tragic accidents, ambulatory urns, and uninvited creatures at the door don't give us pause -- we just turn the page for more. After all, as Gorey himself explained, his mission in life was "to make everybody as uneasy as possible."
