Welcome to CWRU Unplugged 2023: The Annual Res Hall Energy and Sustainability Contest! By working together to lessen our environmental contributions, we strive to lead by example in a world that increasingly needs our help. By signing this pledge, you agree to uphold and educate others on some of the suggestions below.

By signing this pledge you gain points for everyone in your Res Hall or Greek House to win a customized tote bag, water bottle, and free Mitchell's scoop! You will also be individually entered into a raffle for a solar lamp or bento box!

Energy:

Check clothes in the dryer before using the whole cycle

Let clothes naturally dry outside if possible instead of using a dryer

Turn off the lights when no one is there or in general, use a timer for lights

Take the stairs instead of elevators or escalators

Take public transportation when possible

Walk or bike to nearby places instead of using a fuel-burning or battery driven mode of transportation

If you ride a bike/electric scooter, wear a helmet (and bright colors if riding at night)

Unplug electronics when not in use

Don’t leave your window open all day when you aren’t in your room; it wastes AC/heating

Buy locally grown/in-season produce (reduces the carbon footprint it would take to otherwise ship that item)

Reduce Waste:

Try to avoid single-use plastics (food packaging for example)

Implement the use of reusable tupperware, cups, straws, sporks!

Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth

Print everything double-sided and avoid printing when unnecessary

Use cold water when possible and shorten shower time

Bring your reusable water bottle everywhere and don’t accept plastic/coffee cups

Use reusable bags

Try to avoid buying new clothes and shop at thrift stores instead

Donate old clothes instead of throwing them away

Mend an old piece of clothing at Think[box]

Use dish towels instead of paper towels

Go on a walk near campus and pick up trash (with gloves!)

Recycling:

Familiarize yourself with campus recycling policy (https://case.edu/sustainability/campus/recycling)

Recycle bottles/boxes

Break down boxes and pack each trash bag fully before replacing

Start a compost bin

Take extra plastic bags to a grocery store for recycling (to find a location near you visit https://bagandfilmrecycling.org/view/fdod)

General Tips:

Try cutting back on the amount of meat in your diet (ie Meatless Mondays!)

Start a household garden

Start a compost pile

Before consistently purchasing from a brand, research their stance on sustainability

Be active about sustainability issues you care about! Vote in general elections, sign petitions, attend protests - make your voice heard!

Attend an SSC, Sunrise, or TCP meeting
