Marketing internships are designed to provide work experiences that cannot be taught in the classroom.

Marketing internships that qualify for three hours of university credit must be marketing-related. Marketing-related internships are broadly defined and can extend over a wide range of work related activities, including but not limited to: inside or outside sales, customer service, advertising/promotion, direct marketing, account management and product development managing existing company and external data and databases conducting marketing research studies analyzing and interpreting online and offline data using data mining techniques to conduct market segment analyses problem solving skills using business segmentation and buying processes

After securing an approved internship, I understand that a minimum of 200 hours of work is required, three progress reports must be sent electronically to my advisor (each a minimum of two weeks apart), and a final project. Other assignments and deadlines will be posted on Canvas and on the course syllabus.

JMU and State Authorization

Changing state and federal legislation regarding university operation in states other than Virginia has resulted in varying rules on student placement in off-site locations. There are some states in which we are not allowed to place students because we lack state authorization. JMU is part of an organization called SARA (State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements), which allows our students to complete internships or any other in-place, for credit courses in any participating state. JMU joined SARA in June 2015.

There are also several states in which JMU has received authorization or has confirmed that we do not need additional authorization for students to be placed there. JMU cannot offer credit-bearing courses (including internships for credit) in states that are not members of SARA or in a state where JMU is not authorized. Students may only participate in off-site, for-credit opportunities in the states that are approved.

Please check  https://www.jmu.edu/online/state-authorization/index.shtml to ensure that your state is approved before you proceed. Currently, California is the only state that is not approved.
