Dear Families,
We are very excited to offer a second-language learning opportunity to our sixth graders! It is time for your student to make that selection. The earlier they start, the more native they will sound! As this is your child’s first true choice in education and as learning a language is challenging, please listen to your child’s passion, so they start this journey on the right foot. Most students will be ready to begin a World Language in 6th grade. Based on learning needs, some may start in 7th grade, 8th or at the high school. No matter when your child will start the second language-learning journey, we want to provide a clear overview of the language offerings* at Wayland Public Schools:
~Latin
~French
~Spanish
~Chinese
Fifth graders have seen a video introducing the language options in Wayland. An overview of the World Languages program for fifth grade caregivers took place on Monday, March 25th at 7:00pm virtually on Google Meet
meet.google.com/zbu-zvyp-vzz. Now, it is your turn. Through conversations with your family and your child’s teaching team, your child will be making the decision for their middle school career. For students with IEPs this conversation will include input from the liaison. If your child will be starting a language next year, please indicate your child’s first and second language choices by filling out this form. This language choice is made for the duration of their middle school career in order to complete the Novice level and be ready for the Intermediate level at the high school.** If your child already speaks one of these languages at home***, please sign up for one of the other three options as we offer introductory courses. Please visit
https://wms.wayland.k12.ma.us/academics/world_languages_department for answers to frequently asked questions, links to our individual language websites or for the Overview Presentation.
Please fill out this form no later than Thursday, March 28th, 2024. Your child is guaranteed one of their top two choices. First choice preference will be given to those who make their selection by the March 28th deadline above. Please direct any questions to Klara Sands, WL Curriculum Leader, klara_sands@waylandps.org.
*Novice classes (Latin 1, French 1, Spanish 1, Chinese 1) at the HS are offered based on enrollment numbers each year. Spanish 1 tends to run every year, the others are offered only when there is enough interest. Latin 1, French 1, Chinese 1 are rarely offered at the HS. If your child is interested in starting any of these three, your safest bet is to start at the middle school level.
**There is a two-year same-language requirement for graduation at the HS.
***As students reach the Intermediate-High level of Proficiency in a language that the district offers or in any of the languages that the child may speak at home, they will be awarded the Seal of Biliteracy on their HS diploma.
