TMU Motion Picture Lab order form

NOTES:

Scans are deleted at the end of each term or as required by the lab. Backup your files as soon as possible.

Print services resume late Sept 2024.

Deposit orders in the red dropbox beside the lab on the third floor of the IMA (122 Bond St., room 327).

External clients lacking card access into Toronto Metropolitan University should make alternate plans via the email at the end of this form.

The name on this order form will be responsible for:
- Payment and pickup of orders under your name.
- Acting as designated contact person for group projects / shared rolls.
First Name (Given or Preferred Name) *
Last Name (Family Name) *
Phone #
Optional, in case the lab has questions needing immediate feedback.
Student ID # *
If not a Toronto Metropolitan student, enter "x" and the lab will contact you to arrange alternate payment.
Professor *
Footage submitted *
Billing will be rounded up in 50 foot increments. Please label boxes "1 of 2," "2 of 2," etc if dropping off multiple rolls.
Camera *
Specify your Bolex # or other camera used. Bolex #s can be found in your online booking history.

1st yr student access is limited to Bolexes #1-32. Other cameras & resources require training from a prof or technician before booking.

Note that our lab predates Super 16 and our processor can cause minor scratches in that format's extended picture area. Ask the lab to see a sample.
Neg processing
*
$20/100' roll. Camera negative MUST be processed after exposure. Only then may it be carefully examined and copied to make a film print and/or digital file.

For any black & white stocks other than Kodak 7222 Double-X talk to the lab. Colour film processing is not available at TMU.
Push/Pull neg process
Optional. $3 surcharge per process. A push or pull must be decided before processing neg, not by the lab. Please label each roll needing a Push (when underexposed 1 or 2 stops) or Pull (when overexposed 1 stop).

Proper exposure is always recommended. Too little light overall will leave your composition looking flat no matter the processing. Take the time to light dynamically!
Digital Transfer / Scan *
$33/100' of 16mm. Digital scans are available from b&w or colour negs or prints. Negs produce best results.

Default files are 2.5K ProRes 422 HQ, roughly 9 GB per 100' of 16mm. All scans are "flat" low-contrast files, for maximum versatility when editing the look of your shots. It is expected for flat, overscanned files to require contrast adjustments and cropping.

Links to scans provided on payment.
The fine, fine print:

DROPPING OFF FILMS:

Unprocessed film boxes & cans must be FIRMLY closed and then sealed or you risk damaging your results. Please don't use tape to seal daylight boxes when possible. Instead, read the box before tearing it open for instruction how to preserve the top label to use as a seal. You will impress others by knowing what you're doing.

Identify the back of every box with the name & email used on this form as well as your professor's name if applicable. For group rolls, only put the delegate's name used on this form.

PICKING UP ORDERS:

Orders are picked up and paid for with your OneCard at the Technology Resource Centre (IMA B-18) no sooner than 6pm the day after your lab cutoff. Film scans are provided via a QR code.

Orders are held no later than the start of the following semester. Uncollected orders are considered abandoned and will be recycled, used as scrap editing material and deleted.

RESUBMITTING ORDERS:

Negatives or prints that have already been processed can be resubmitted to the lab later for reprinting or scanning but must be submitted as follows or a surcharge will apply: 1) All rolls must be submitted head out. 2) There must be 10ft (about two fully outstretched arms' worth) of white leader spliced to EACH the head and the tail of your roll. 3) Each leader must be identified in permanent marker with "HEAD" or "TAIL" plus your name & email.

FILM CARE:

While minimal handling of negatives is best, after lab processing it is safe to examine film in the light. Hold film by its edges only—never its surface. Avoid any dust and fingerprints. Negatives are irreplaceable and extremely difficult to clean so treat them with care. Store film somewhere dry and cool.

SUPER-8, REGULAR-8 & 35MM SCANS:

Super-8 & Regular-8 HD scans are $16/50' (TMU student price), with a surcharge per splice/damaged perf repair.
5k scans of 35mm are also available, pricing TBD.
These formats will not take priority over 16mm orders and may take up to one week.

Processing for 35mm B&W neg should be available starting Oct 2024.

S8 & R8 films can not be photochemically processed at TMU. Contact Niagara Custom Lab and expect longer turnaround times.

LAB CONTACT:

Lab hours are Monday—Thursday, 8AM-6PM. If the door is closed, try back later as the technician may be in the darkroom for up to an hour at a time.

Film processing pauses from July to mid-September. Print may be limited to the Fall term. Scanning is available year round.
