The Chinguacousy Branch has been a pillar of the Bramalea community since the Civic Centre was opened in the early 1970s. It is often referred to as the "flagship branch" of the Brampton Library. In early March 2023 the City of Brampton declared the Civic Centre as "surplus land" and "gifted" the publicly owned property to Toronto Metropolitan University. The City of Brampton and TMU failed to consult the community or tenants of the building before making such a huge decision. 

On March 29th the Library announced to the public that TMU was forcing them out by the end of August and they would have to move to the Ski Chalet located at Chinguacousy Park. This will result in a massive loss of space for the Library, the current space in the Civic Centre is over 30,000 square ft, but the useable space in the ski chalet will be 10,000 - 14,000 square ft. Over a 50% decrease in space. As a result the library would be forced to reduce services for Bramalea residents. The new site would also face challenges for parking as the busy park often fills up on weekends which would create some challenges for those trying to use the library. 

We are calling on TMU and the City to come up with an alternative solution and allow the Library to stay in its current location until a more feasible solution can be found for all parties. Consulting the community is extremely important and the City and TMU must do this before making further decisions instead of the closed door decision that created this mess in the first place. 

It is important to note, the Civic Centre is also home to numerous community organizations and groups that are also being evicted. The Ski Chalet is home to recreation staff, community rooms, and recreation programs.
