(1) our virtual press conference 1/25 @ noon on the need to speed up SFPD reform, and
(2) virtual public comment for Supervisors Tue 1/26 SFPD reform meeting so you don't have to watch the whole multi-hour Board of Supervisors hearing (probably sometime in the evening).
Details:
* On Tue, Jan 26, 2021, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will hold a virtual hearing on San Francisco Police Department reform. At some point during that day you can call in with a short comment.
* Wealth and Disparities in the Black Community, led by Phelicia Jones, is formulating our talking points for the hearing and we'd love to have your support for these in the public comment section.
* We will text you two days beforehand with talking points and guidance, and then on Tue, Jan 26 we'll text you when public comment is coming up (probably sometime in the evening but who knows).
* We also have a virtual press conference on this topic Mon 1/25 @ Noon and we would love you to just show up virtually in support.
Context:
* In the wake of SFPD's public murder of Mario Woods in 2015, SF committed to a reform initiative with the US Department of Justice in 2016 (now overseen by the California Department of Justice).
* Now, five years later, SFPD has completed a mere 40 of the 272 (15%) recommendations as of the last official report in March 2020.
* Moreover, anti-Black racial bias within the agency remains alarmingly high and unchanged. The SFPD arrests and uses force on Black individuals 10x more than white individuals, unimproved since 2016. The SFPD stops Black drivers 5x more than white drivers, which has actually gotten worse since 2016.
Thank you for your support!
