Music Options for Fifth Grade Students
Music training begins in our elementary schools and is available at each grade level throughout middle and high school. RBUSD invites 5th grade students to choose to participate in our vocal music or beginning band program.
Vocal music students will prepare for middle school band/choir programs by learning to read and notate music from multiple genres/cultures while focusing on singing and movement, percussion, arranging and evaluating music, and even learning music composition.
The 5th grade Band curriculum provides a challenging way to enhance what the students have learned in their 1st-4th grade vocal music classes. Band students may choose from a limited list consisting of Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, or Trombone. Our Band instruction has been proven to enhance student ability in math and reading, as well as provide interpersonal relationship skills necessary for the 21st century workplace.
Students perform in concerts and learn to work together as a team while building skills on their instrument. Students learn to perform interesting music and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that comes with success.
What do you need?
Parents and caregivers of band students are responsible for providing an instrument (Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, or Trombone), accessories, and instruction book (Tradition of Excellence Book 1 for your child's specific instrument). Most families purchase supplies, books, and instruments from local music stores. These stores tend to have good deals on "Rent-to-Own" programs at the beginning of the school year.
*Students have far greater success playing on quality instruments purchased or rented from local music stores rather than the inexpensive counterparts found online.
There are a limited number of district-owned instruments available for students who qualify on a need basis. The school district instrument loan form is also on the band page that can be found on your school's website.
What is the commitment?
Students are expected to:
• Practice regularly to keep up with assignments/expectations.
• Keep a positive attitude/behavior while working/learning together as part of a team.
