To highlight Indigenous-led charities and raise awareness of their important work with the Unite for Change and CanadaHelps donor community, we launched the Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Fund in collaboration with Wanda Brascoupe, Bear Clan, Skarù rę', Kanien'keha and Anishinabe. Wanda has worked in the philanthropic sector for 20 years and is a sought-after advisor, fundraiser and donor in Indigenous philanthropy.
What is an Indigenous-led charity? Utilizing the matrix from The Circle that was created by Indigenous Peoples working in this sector alongside Elder advisors, Indigenous-led means:
-Indigenous cultures, values, and languages central to daily operations
-Indigenous leadership at all levels. This means Indigenous people are involved in decision making at all levels of the organization, from Board to Executive/Management to Staff.
-Programs delivered by Indigenous People to Indigenous People
-Protocols with Indigenous communities. Meaning relationships go beyond collaborations or only a mandate to serve Indigenous communities.
