Is a 1 percent local sales tax worth considering?
A Worcester City Council subcommittee is looking into a 1 percent local sales tax. The new tax, first broached by the Mayor’s Tax Policy Committee two years ago, could generate $10 million to $15 million to fund city programs and services. Proponents say the tax would create a more stable fiscal situation and move the city away from its over-reliance on property taxes, while opponents say it could lead consumers to make purchases outside Worcester and disproportionately hurt smaller businesses. Should the City Council request authority from the state Legislature to levy a 1 percent local sales tax? Tell us in up to 50 words.
